School and Cancer

I head straight to my locker where James and Kate are waiting for me. The second I walk up to my locker I'm attacked with hugs from Kate. "I missed you so much!" Kate squealed. "You saw me yesterday," I point out as I push her off me.
"But that was forever ago!" Kate says dramatically. I chuckle at her silly antics and turn to greet my boyfriend. "Hey babe, did you miss me as much as Kate here did?"
"I think I must have missed you ten times more than Kate." James replied leaning in for a kiss. I allow him a quick peck but nothing more. I'm not big on PDA.
We continue to talk until the bell rings. I grab my chemistry and history folders and head towards the science room.
After a very long and boring chemistry lesson with Mr Greene. I swear the man wants me dead, with all the lessons he gives! They're designed to torture mankind. I hate chemistry. At least I've got history next. I start a to head towards room 25, where we have history with Miss Jackson. My favourite class with my favourite teacher. I love learning about the past and how things have changed and also how some things never change. Having Miss Jackson as a teacher makes it ten times better. She is a sweet, little old lady with a gorgeous smile. She is kind to everyone and over the years has become something like my personal advisor. Whenever something goes wrong in my life, I often go see Miss Jackson for advice. I take a seat at the front of the class and start my assignment that we were given last week.

Half way through the class I get a text from Dad.
Hey sweetie, we are taking mum to hospital. The doctors at the clinic can't do the tests needed there so it's off to the hospital we go. Lisa will pick you up in 20 minutes. Xx
I read over the text again and can't help but feel worried. It has to be fairly serious if they have to take her to hospital. I raise my hand to tell Miss Jackson that I have to leave in 15 minutes.

After Miss Jackson dismissed me I head to the office where Lisa will pick me up from. Lisa is my mother's best friend, she has been since high school. They are like sisters, in fact up until I was ten, I thought she was my actual Aunty. I walk up to the reception desk in the office and get my permission to leave school form, which I have to get my parents to sign later and head towards Lisa's car. I hop in the front seat and smile at Lisa. "Hey Lisa, how are you?"
"I'm fine, Jess. How are you, though?" She looked at me with such sincere concern in her eyes that made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. It's a nice feeling when someone shows that they care for you. "I am okay at the moment," I reply, "I just hope there is nothing to terribly wrong with Mum," Lisa glances over at me and bites her lip, "Actually there is something I have to tell you about that," Lisa takes a big breath and says, "the doctors at the clinic thinks your mother might have cancer. That's why they sent her to the hospital, to find out if they were right and to find out how serious." It takes a while for this new information to settle in. I definitely wasn't expecting cancer. My mother is one of the fittest women I know. She was the last person I expected to get cancer. I look over at Lisa and give a nervous chuckle, "They don't really think she has cancer. She can't. Mum is extraordinarily healthy! Her diet is better than anyone's I know." Lisa gives a sad smile, "It doesn't work like that," she sighs, "cancer can come sneaking up on the best of us." Lisa and I sit in silence for the rest of the ride to the hospital.
