She walked down the long corridor that led to the room that she would spend the next year in. The box she carried was more than a little heavy and she struggled with it. But she was much too shy to ask for help from the strangers that passed her in the hall. So she walked in silence to room 3D. Her new dorm. She gingerly pulled the key from her pocket as not to upset the box she carried. As she went to place the key in the door, it opened. A look of surprise graced her face as she looked into bright blue eyes. She attempted a smile but it came across as a little awkward.
"You must be my new roommate. I seriously hope you are sane because the last girl I roomed with like worshiped the devil in her spare time. Needless to say, she couldn't take the pressure of school and left. And now you are here. I think we will get along fine. I am Kate." Kate extended her hand, but realized it was impossible to shake with the rather large box she carried "Oh my goodness. My mother would kill me if she saw my manners" she laughed light heartedly as she removed the box from her hands and placed it on the empty bed.
"Sorry. It's my first time in a dorm and I am more than a little nervous. My name is Matilda. I am a freshman." Matilda reached out and finally shook her hand.
"Oh don't worry about it. I remember when I was a freshman. I was like a scared little mouse" she laughed at herself "Maybe I could show you around after we load the rest of your stuff into here. No one has classes on the first day because it's supposed to be like a day for you freshman to get settled in. Later I have some plans and if you want you can tag along. I am just going to this really great cafe downtown with some friends from class. If you want to come that's cool. It's nothing formal or anything. Just poetry night. Do you enjoy poetry?" She asked while walking out of the dorm and down the hall to get the rest of Matilda's things.
"Uh. Yeah. Sure. I mean I am not a writer or anything. I have horrible grammar." Kate laughed.
"Don't we all. Good thing for you that this is not open mic night." She said as she hefted a suitcase out of what Matilda had motioned as her car. Matilda grabbed another box and headed back up to the room. They then proceeded to finish unloading the car in silence.
"You know what? I'm sorry but I really need to unpack. Maybe I could take a raincheck?" Matilda asked. Kate smiled.
"It's no big deal. This is college. You do what you have to. Listen. This side of the closet is yours and this half of the desk is yours." She said motioning to the left side of everything. "The bathrooms are community ones. They are the last door on the left. Uh. What else? Oh. Do you have a cell? I mean most people do but do you?" She asked while pulling out her phone. Matilda smiled.
"Yeah."
"Good. Here let me see it. I will put my number in your phone and your number in mine." She said as she typed on the keyboard of Matilda's phone. "So. Do you have a boyfriend?" She looked up at Matilda to ask.
"No. I'm not dating anyone right now." She blushed at the personal question. Kate laughed at her embarassment.
"You are too cute." She smiled. "Well the general rule for hookups is the tie on the door if you decide you need to get laid or something. Try not to do it too often because it really is a hassle finding a place to stay." Matilda smiled.
"I really don't think you have anything to worry about on that front." Kate slowly nodded her head.
"Alright if you say so." She said and handed Matilda back her phone. "I got to run. I forgot about meeting my friend Joe for lunch. Just text me if you need anything. Seriously. Anything." She looked at Matilda curious.
"I think I can figure it out. But if I can't I will just write you. Thanks a lot for making me feel comfortable. I was seriously anxious before." Kate smiled largely and revealed a beautiful set of white teeth. The fact that she noticed this surprised Matilda. Mostly because she had not taken the time to really look at Kate. There was no doubt that Kate was beautiful. She seemed more of a tomboy. She wore shredded jeans and a faded blue tee. Her long blonde hair was tied into a ponytail revealing her delicate features. Her high cheekbones brought attention to her beautiful blue almond shaped eyes. She looked a little exotic and intriguing. She seemed perfect in every way. Matilda bit her lip. Dang. She was crushing on her roommate.
