When Kate, Matilda, and Scottie walked into the cafe everyone's heads turned to look at them. Matilda automatically put her head down in order to avoid further scrutinizing and they walked through the cafe together. Luckily there was a booth open on the far wall despite the amount of people in the cafe. Matilda took the time to look around. It looked like any other cafe except much larger with less light in it. She guessed the lack of light had to do with setting an ambience for the people who went there. Matilda sat next to Scottie in the booth and smiled at her.
"So what time does the whole poetry reading start?" Matilda asked Kate.
"Around seven so we have time to just chill and talk before it starts. You guys want something to drink?" Scottie shook her head.
"I could use a frappé if you don't mind." Matilda replied and Kate smiled and left. Scottie turned to Matilda.
"So what's up with you and Kate? Are you guys like an unofficial item or something?" Matilda chuckled. And then glanced in the direction Kate had gone.
"Naw. Kate and I are just friends. Don't get me wrong, she is beautiful and smart and funny, but it's an awkward situation. You just shouldn't date your roommate." Scottie smiled. And looked at her knowingly.
"I see. So you can't. I can tell you like her though. She seems cool. But you don't know me just yet. Give me a chance." Scottie said as if she had everything planned out. Matilda laughed
"It;s not even like that. I would not have asked you out if I had other plans in mind. I wasn't like trying to make Kate jealous. I just genuinely liked your smile." She grinned at Scottie. All of the sudden Kate popped up and sat down across from Scottie and Matilda.
"So, Scottie, what brings you to this part of town?" She asked as she set the frappé in front of Matilda and Matilda smiled her thanks and took a sip out of the hot drink.
"Oh. Um. It's actually complicated. It is a mix of things really. This college is cheaper and my parents don't like that I am so far away. They are afraid that I will turn into some crazy person who does drugs and has sex with strangers." At the last part Kate glanced at Matilda and Matilda blushed thinking about the night at the club. She would never totally live it down. Scottie caught the glance at Matilda and instantly became curious but she curved it and continued to talk. "I guess the fact that I came out of the closet last year made my parents think that the college I was at had something to do with it. Who knows what they think about." She smiled and all of the sudden the lights dimmed signalling the beginning of the show. They all turned their attention to the stage. True to her word, Kate's vision of beauty walked onto the stage and all the girls stared at the red head on stage with jaws dropped. Matilda was never really into red heads before that night. They all sat and listened intently at what she said. By the end they were all in awe. And the lights brightened and they all looked at one another.
"You weren't kidding!" Scottie said to Kate and they all shared a laugh. Surprisingly the girl walked straight to the table that they sat at. She looked them all over once and settled her eyes on Kate. Kate smiled and stood and embraced the girl. Matilda watched the girl and admired her perfectly imperfect freckles and mile long legs along with what had to be the hottest body on God's earth.
"Oh man I can't remember a time when I was more nervous!" She exclaimed a little loudly. "I have been trying to say the ending just right to grab the audience. What did you guys think?" She looked to Matilda and Scottie.
"Perfect." They both said in unison which got a laugh from the red head. She smiled and extended her hand to Scottie.
"I'm Josephine. Kate and I used to be an item." She lovingly glanced at Kate and then back to Scottie and shook her hand. Then she looked intently at Matilda and held her hand just a little too long for normal and then grinned at her which made Kate frown.
"Hey don't go scamming on my roommate Josephine. She is here with her date already." She laughed and it sounded forced even to her own ears. Josephine grinned.
"I don't see a ring. To me that means available. And what I want I usually get. But you know that already don't you Kate?" She said in a smart ass tone. Kate sighed heavily and turned to Matilda.
"You don't want to be on the other end of that affection, trust me." She said just poking fun at Josephine and Josephine lightly punched Kate. It seemed that they had a sort of sister like bond now. Which made Matilda rest easier.
"So, what's your name sweet cheeks?" Matilda almost choked on the frappé she was sipping. She laughed nervously as Josephine sat down next to her and forced them over into the booth further.
"My name is Matilda and this is Scottie." She recovered quickly from her skirmish with her drink. Josephine barely nodded at Scottie before looking back to Matilda. Matilda began to wonder if she had something strange about her lately was just attracting every lesbian in a fifty mile radius.
"Matilda. That's a very pretty name. It suits you. I hope you don't mind me saying that your features are just beautiful together. I mean," She paused to brush a tendril of dark hair off of Matilda's face, "what nationality are you?" She asked with a doe eyed expression which put Matilda on guard.
"A little of everything. I am a bit of a mutt." She laughed and looked to Kate for help but she seemed to be in a constant state of uncomfortable and would be no help. Matilda sighed. "I don't want to keep you from you admirers though. We can get to know each other some other time." She tried to subtly brush off Josephine and her pout gained a smile from Kate which aggravated Matilda a bit.
"Yeah I really think we should go. We have school tomorrow and all. Maybe we can see you up here next week, same time same place?" Kate glanced at Josephine and Josephine nodded.
"That sounds great!" She was suddenly chipper again. "It was really nice to meet you." She winked at Matilda and sauntered away. Matilda turned to Kate and frowned. All the while Scottie sat by and just observed the skirmish with a smile. As they got up and left all of them were silent until they walked outside. And for some reason they all just busted out laughing.
"My god Kate! Way to warn me! You almost got me raped in there." Matilda told her as she bent over laughing.
"Oh come on! You can't rape the willing!" She said and immediately started laughing harder. When the laughing stopped they all walked on with tears running down their faces from laughing so hard.
"Hey Kate. Let me talk to Scottie real quick. I will be up in a minute." Kate nodded as they approached their dorm. Kate ran ahead and Matilda turned to Scottie and smiled.
"So." She said with a grin.
"So." Scottie replied with an even bigger grin,
"I am sorry about the whole mess at the cafe. I don't know why people act like that sometimes." She said and took Scottie's hand in hers.
"It's not a big deal. Things happen." She said, her voice deepening. "I wanted to talk to you about this whole date thing. I think maybe we should put off dating until you are totally sure as to what you want. I think that the more time you spend with me the more you will like me. But maybe that is just my ego talking. Either way. I want this to be casual. We are both free to pursue things. I just want you to be honest about it." She smiled and Matilda thought she had never heard such a selfless thing said before. It made her heart skip a beat.
"Alright. Casual then. She said with a smile. She looked at Scottie and pulled her close until every inch of their bodies touched. Matilda moved her hand to the back of Scottie's head and pulled her lips towards her. She gently pressed her lips to hers and closed her eyes. She opened her mouth and so did Scotty and just a little tongue slipped into their mouths. They both sighed and Matilda released her regrettably. Her lips had tasted like fresh watermelon but her mouth had tasted like nothing but hot fluid sex appeal. Matilda sighed in remembrance.
"Wow." She smiled and gave Scottie one last sweet kiss. "Goodnight." She said and walked into her dorm.
