Chapter 6
“So…um…this is a grocery store” Charlie explained hesitantly, repeatedly shooting me confused looks. I studiously ignored him. “People come here for…um groceries” he continued, pink staining his cheeks
“How fascinating” I replied with a flat tone while inside I was going crazy. He hadn’t even attempted to talk about the prank he and Eliza had pulled. I had at least thought he would act concerned for appearances sake or gloat over my stupidity…something! Instead he was treating me like a ticking time bomb and that wouldn’t do at all if I was planning on getting my revenge.
He picked up a basket and led the way into the warehouse-like store. Picking up my own basket, I called out to Charlie “Where’s the female aisle? Better if I go alone don’t you think?” He looked beyond relieved.
“Definitely! It’s just over there” he pointed down to aisle 7 “I’ll come and get you in five minutes” he chirped happily, bouncing off in the opposite direction. What a fool. I made my way into the aisle and paused just to admire what I had found. Shelf upon shelf dedicated to female products and needs. I was in heaven. I painfully combed every nook and cranny of the aisle, searching for Charlie’s worst nightmare “Eden?” I glanced around; Charlie was standing by the opening of the aisle, not brave enough to actually step in.
“Are we done?” I asked wandering over to him. He nodded in reply and led the way over to the checkout points. “I’ll go in this one and you should go in that one. It’ll be faster” I offered innocently
“Good idea” he beamed and handed his semi full basket to the girl. I watched on with a smirk twisting my lips. I distractedly handed my basket to my checkout lady, my eyes glued to the unaware Charlie. I noticed how he stood lazily with his hands stuffed in his pocket, not a care in the world.
“Um sir? I mean miss…I mean” I stifled my laughter as the young girl who had been previously ogling Charlie held up a large container of estrogen pills. Hurriedly she beeped the pills through and continued, trying to cover her slip up. “What I mean is, would you like paper or plastic bags miss?” Charlie’s suddenly stiff back was to me so unfortunately I missed his facial expression.
“Paper would be fine” he growled. Finally I let my restraints go and my mirthful laughter rang throughout the store.
“I’m going to guess he’s a friend of yours?” my checkout girl asked me
“Yeah something like that” I replied around laughter as I payed. Charlie stormed out of the store casting one last filthy look my way. Picking up my bag I followed behind him still chuckling quietly
I hopped into the driver seat, ignoring the way Charlie stonily stared out the window. My thirst for vengeance now quenched I felt more like my usual self. “Pull over” he demanded. I shrugged at his abnormal behavior but obliged his odd request. He literally jumped out of the car and sprinted into the stores lining the street. “Just a little eager” I mumble waiting for him. Not seconds later he walked back out with a content smile on his face and a bag in his hand. He threw a smaller bag at me.
THWAK
It hit me squarely in the forehead, due to my lack of hand eye coordination. Rubbing my head I opened the small box inside. Nestled in the soft velvet was a modest, slim ring. The top was dusted in small diamonds and it reflected the light beautifully. It was nothing compared to anything already in my jewelry box but for some reason I found my heart warming at the thought of Charlie getting me an engagement ring in the first place
