Paul stood at the side of the stage, watching as the Debutantes, a trio of stunning women of color, performed an electrifying rendition of "Please Mr. Postman" for the enthusiastic crowd.
Charlie, the young woman singing lead vocals, caught Paul's attention. He thought she was the most beautiful among the group and enjoyed spending time with her. They talked a lot about music and shared a love for American black artists.
Paul was surprised to find that her unfinished songs were good but needed some touching up, as she was also a songwriter in the making.
He believed that the Debutantes had the potential to become very popular, and he was optimistic that their Christmas performances would help increase their exposure and lead to more record sales.
John approached his friend from behind, holding a bottle of Coke in his hand. "Those birds are pretty talented," he commented, interrupting Paul's thoughts. "Especially Tilly." After discovering her last name was Tillman, John had given Charlie the nickname and thought Tilly was a clever play on it.
"She's really impressive, isn't she?" Paul replied, agreeing with John's observation.
Charlie immediately caught John's eye with her striking features. Her long, lustrous black hair, full lips, guarded but expressive dark brown eyes, and caramel-colored skin piqued his interest.
"Maybe we should offer one of our songs for them to record," suggested Paul.
John shrugged, showing little interest. "Do you have any particular song in mind?"
Paul shook his head. "Not at the moment."
He smiled and playfully messed up his friend's hair. "I'm sure you'll come up with something," John laughed.
Paul playfully dodged John's hand and shook his fist as if he were about to fight. "I'm going back to the dressing room," he said, running his hand through his hair, trying to fix it.Meanwhile, John stayed behind and sipped his pop while watching Charlie.
