Matt's POV

"You'll ruin your eyes, you know that?" her voice cut through the dark.

I smiled. "Of course," I said.

I could hear her shuffling around in the dark. "Where's the dang light?" I heard her mutter.

I opened my DS to illuminate her way. She finally plopped down beside me. "Thanks," she muttered. I closed my DS, submersing us in the dark again.

"I need to tell you something," she said quietly.

"What is it?" I asked.

"When you two ran off, I sat under the desk for some weird reason. I think it has to do with safety or comfort. Anyway, after you left, two men came in. They were talking about taking a girl...tonight." Her voice started to quiver. "I think they meant me," she whispered quietly.

"Do you know what they looked like?" I asked.

"Matt, I was under a table. All I could see was their feet," she said sounding slightly annoyed.

"Did you say tonight?" I asked.

I felt her head nodded against my shoulder. "They said it'd be perfect since we just had a fight. Damn Near," she muttered. I felt her arms wrap around me. She hugged me to her body.

I'm so glad it's dark, I thought to myself. "Don't worry," I said reassuringly. "I'm here. We'll stay for the night until this all blows over. Then in the morning, we'll find Mello. Speaking of him, why didn't you go to him instead?" I asked.

"Baldy was with him," she said quietly.

"Baldy? Oh, you mean Rodd."

"Rodd? That name doesn't fit him."

We sat in the dark for a couple of minutes. "Why are we sitting in the dark?" Ali asked suddenly.

"My rooms kind of a mess and it's probably safer. So no one knows we're here," I said.

"Your room?" she asked.

"Yeah," I said slowly.

"I've never been in a boys room before," she muttered thoughtfully.

I laughed slightly. "Even if it's dark?" I asked.

"Even if it's dark."

We heard voices from right outside the door.

"Can you find her?" one hissed.

"She's nowhere," another said.

"Check this room," the first said. Footsteps walked away. A hand turned the doorknob and opened the door.

Ali gripped me tightly. It took all my power not to wheeze and push her away.

The stranger was stumbling around the room, swearing. "Where's the damn light?" the voice mumbled.

I smiled to myself, knowing the person would never find it.

There was a loud thud and more swearing.

This time I had to hold back on laughing my balls off.

"Screw this," the voice said and exited, closing the door behind them. I waited until the footsteps faded to start laughing.

Ali giggled slightly and loosened her death grip.

"I don't think they'll be coming back in here," I said.

"Maybe not," she said. I could hear the smile in her voice.

I put my hand on her head. I heard a small gasp. "Get some rest. I'll stay up," I reassured her.

She slid down so her head was in my lap. "Thank you, Matt," I heard her mutter before she fell asleep.

I sat there absentmindedly stroking her hair, thinking. So this is what it's like to have a girl in my room, I thought. Does this even count though? It doesn't matter. I shouldn't worry about these things right now.

Nothing happened at all for hours, then my door opened. "Matt?" Mello's voice asked.

I sighed in relief. "Yeah?" I answered.

"Have you seen Alika?" he asked flipping on the light. He spotted her on my lap. "Never mind. Found her," he said. A small smiled played on his lips.

"It is not what it looks like!" I practically shouted.

Mello put a finger to his lips and gestured at Ali. I nodded and continued to stroke her hair. Mello came over and sat down beside me. "Whatcha doing?" he asked casually.

"What does it look like?" I asked a little annoyed at him for enjoying this.

"Hmmm..."

I shoved him lightly on the shoulder. "There are men after her," I said.

"Men? As in this building?" Mello asked.

I nodded.

"Damn," Mello swore.

"I'm waiting the night out with her. Maybe they'll leave in the morning," I said shrugging.

"Maybe," Mello muttered, thinking.

I leaned my head back against he wall and closed my eyes.

"Are you tired?" Mello asked.

"Yeah, a little," I muttered.

"I'll keep watch. You can go to sleep," he offered.

"Thanks," I muttered before falling into a deep sleep with Ali in my lap and Mello on my side.
