Rikers POV:
Three days after we found out that Jess was pregnant, things had started to settle down. We had told everyone, who all seemed very excited. Although I just couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was going to happen.
As I lay in my bed, tossing and turning, I tried to fall to sleep. Nothing would work. Finally, I gave up and rolled to my side, deciding to just stay awake. My alarm read 5:30am. Jess was sleeping silently, her arm draped over her stomach. Rocky was snoring away in his own bed, mumbling something about the moon. My mind wandered, creating little scenarios. We hadn't really spoken about the baby. I didn't even know if she wanted it.
As daylight rolled in, I headed for a shower, hoping to wash away the lack of sleep. Having a baby seemed like hard work. Hayley and Scott seemed to cope, even with the twins. I wondered if J and I would be good parents...The water turned cold, making me jump back into reality. I shut it off, drying my body with a fresh towel.
Lazily, I shrugged on some jeans and a plain white shirt, not bothering to dry my hair. I needed to get out and clear my head. After shoving my feet into my worn out converse, I strolled down the road, heading to nowhere in particular. Apparently a new bakery had opened between the book store and the local music place. Feeling hungry, I entered the little shop.
Instantly I was hit with the smell of fresh coffee and cakes. My mouth watered as I scanned the menu for something tasty. Once I had chosen, I approached the counter, placing my order.
"Uh hi, can I have a mug of hot chocolate and a stack of nutella waffles please" I asked the boy behind the till. Handing over my money, I waited patiently for my breakfast. In what seemed like seconds, I was seated at a table staring down at a steaming plate of waffles.
I had to admit, the food was good. As I finished up, I glanced around a bit. In the corner sat an old woman, silently reading a newspaper. The boy at the counter was wiping down its' surface, every so often pushing up his glasses. His sandy hair kept falling over his eyes, making him flick his head. He carried on like this for a good five minutes.
Flick, push. Flick, push. Flick, push. Flick, push.
Feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket, I knew I should head home. I left quickly, thanking the boy on my way. The sunlight stung my eyes slightly as I walked back. But I didn't mind. Today hadn't started out so good, I hoped as it progressed, things would get better.
It seemed everyone was up by the time I dropped my keys onto the coffee table. Ross was running through the house, followed closely by Ryland. I could just about make out their shouts.
"ROSS I SWEAR TO GOD, JUST GIVE ME IT BACK!"
"NO! YOU DON'T NEED IT!" With that, they were gone, out into the garden. Rolling my eyes, I headed up to find Jess. Checking my room, I found nothing. Pursing my lips, I decided to see if she was in with Rydel.I raised my hand to knock, when something stopped me. From inside, I could hear voices.
"I don't know Delly.. I just don't know"
"Jess you need to talk to him about this"
"What if he wants me to abort it? Or if he wants to keep it?"
"You have just said two of the only three options you can choose. He will pick one. But what do you want?"
My breath caught in my throat as I waited for her reply. A long pause followed Rydels words, making me grow more and more nervous.
"I-"
"Riker dude, what are you doing?" Rocky called from down the hall way, interrupting her. I jumped back from the door, putting as much space between the room and I as I could. Moments later, it swung open, revealing a curious pair of girls.
"Oh uh I was coming to see if you guys were up here" I mumbled, looking at the floor sheepishly.
"Well we are, lets go" J said, a little too cheerfully. She practically skipped towards me, tugging me down the stairs. I noticed her shooting Rydel a look before we descended down. I was pulled into the kitchen and flung into a empty seat.
Rocky and Delly followed us in, each casting concerned looks at Jess. She was floating around the room, pulling things from cupboards, singing some random tune.
"Is she alright?" Rocky whispered in my ear, leaning his forearms on his knees. I shrugged, watching my girlfriend.
"I have no clue" I replied honestly. Things had gotten way too weird for my liking. All of a sudden, Jess just stopped. She turned to look at us, cradling a broken egg in her hands. Tears swelled in her eyes, her lower lip shaking.
"What's wrong sweetie?" I asked softly, going to her side. I put my hands on her arms, tilting my head to look down at her.
"T-the egg's b-broken" she replied. I frowned, not seeing why she was crying.
"And? Eggs break baby" I told her, feeling her tense under my touch.
"WELL WHY SHOULD THEY? WHY SHOULD THEY SPEND THEIR WHOLE LITTLE EGG LIVES WAITING JUST TO BE BROKEN? MAYBE THEY WANTED TO GROW UP TO BE A SCIENCE TEACHER! OR A FIRE FIGHTER. BUT NO, THEY HAVE TO SIT AND WAIT FOR MONSTERS TO COME AND BREAK THEM FROM THEIR HOMES JUST TO BE EATEN!"
In an instant she just crumbled to the floor, clutching the shell to herself. I turned back to my siblings, mouth agap. Rocky threw his hands in the air, pulling a face, whereas Rydel hurried to her side.
"Jess, listen to me hun, the egg is fine" she cooed. Jess looked up at her, blinking slowly.
"I-it is?"
"Yes of course it is! Because all eggs want to be made into breakfast. It's their dream job." She spoke as if the eggs were living things. I exchanged a look with Rocky who silently mouthed 'Egg fire fighters?' at me. I shook my head, letting out a breath.
"Oh..Okay.." J sniffed, allowing herself to be pulled back up. After the egg was disposed off and her hands washed, Rydel led Jess away, mumbling to her about watching a film.
"Chicks..." Rocky chuckled. I raised an eyebrow, laughing lightly.
"This is going to be a wild ride."
Rockys' POV:
"Hey Rocky! Wanna come to the store with me?" I heard Riker shout from inside. Silently, I made my way over to him, grabbing my jacket.
"Sure, lets go" I replied, already halfway out the door. We climbed in the car and pulled out the driveway.
I noticed Riker's leg was bouncing, his hands tapping the steering wheel. He was far too fidgety.
"Dude, what's wrong?" I asked as we neared some traffic lights. He let out a breath, running his hand through his hair.
"It's this whole baby thing, I don't know if I'm ready" he admitted, biting his lip.
"Well how does Jess feel? Does she want to keep it?" I pressed, trying to get both sides.
"I don't know, we haven't spoken about it..." Riker mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. I frowned, trying to think of what to say.
"Speak to her. You saw how she was earlier, she's most likely freaking out wondering the same things you are. Just speak to her, yeah?" I smiled softly. Slowly he returned my gesture and pulled into the car park.
We clambered out and strolled into the shop, grabbing a cart as we went. I began to chuck in random items I thought we could find a use for. Riker tutted at each one and put the majority back. I chuckled to myself.
"What?" he asked, trying to decide on which type of apple to buy.
I shook my head, laughing yet again. "You'd be the perfect dad" I told him He blushed, dumped the apples in the cart and hurried off. Oh yes, he'd be perfect.
