O Soldier, My Friend

O soldier, my friend
Your leg has been shot and maimed
You shout and fall to the ground
I hear you call my name

O soldier, my friend
I call for help of someone strong
To carry you to the doctors
While the battle rages on

O soldier, my friend
You lay before my eyes
On a table with a doctor
Standing at your side

O soldier, my friend
You cry out in strain
As I stand restless
Telling you, "Ignore the pain."

O soldier, my friend
You give me a pained stare
I hate that your suffering is great
You tell me, "A knife is the air."

O soldier, my friend
I stand by your side
Thinking there may be hope
Now that the blood has dried

O soldier, my friend
I watch your eyes close
I take your hand cold as ice
I glance at the doctor and he knows

O soldier, my friend
I fall to my knee
And I scream, "No! Why him?"
For he was a brother to me

O soldier, my friend
As I kneel here weeping
I long to look back in your eyes
While you are forever sleeping

O soldier, my friend
I take your sword and run
I fight in your place
For the battle is not yet done

O soldier, my friend
I fight with those I admire
Courageous and passionate warriors
I fight for you with anger burning like fire

O soldier, my friend
We have won the fight
I wish you could just see
This celebratory night

O soldier, my friend
I am grieving over your death
But thinking of you in a better place
Puts me at peaceful rest

Note: I wrote this when I was in seventh grade. People have told me that they liked it, so I decided to share it with you lovely people. I hope you like it too. Maybe I'll put more poems in this book.
