Turns out, they didn't have it under control. In less than a month, they had managed to mess things up again.
They had sent Alec again to investigate what seemed to be a Nogitsune, and a bunch of Oni, since he already had an encounter with the mundane hunter family the month before. He knew from the stories that a Nogitsune couldn't be killed, only captured, and that Oni could only be killed with silver. He had taken his bow, and a quiver full of silver pointed arrows, and drew the Mendelin rune. It wouldn't do much in the presence of the Downworlders, but it would help him while travelling through New York City.
He arrived to what seemed like an abandoned High School, just in time to see from a distance what seemed to be the Nogitsune and a couple of teenagers. He looked closer towards the group of teenagers, and noticed a pale freckled boy. The Nogitsune had splitted the two of them, or so it seemed, because there were two of them. One looked smug but mad, and was the Nogitsune himself, the other had to be supported by a short girl, and had a scared but determined look on his face, which looked like he was dying. There was a girl with a katana laying next to her knocked down on the ground, and a boy laying face down to the ground a couple feet further, while the Nogitsune, filled with anger, started yelling at his former host and the girl supporting him, walking towards them in a fast pace, making the two teenagers walk backwards, keeping their eyes on the void boy before them.
"Divine move. Divine move. You think you have any moves at all? You can kill the Oni, but me? I'm a thousand years old. You can't kill me!"
The short girl supporting his host stopped backing away. "But we can change you." The words came out fast, as if they were urgent, but determined.
The Nogitsune stopped in his tracks and just stared at her. "What?" He said, confused.
They say something about a scroll, and it seemed like it dawned upon the Nogitsune. "Change the host." He whispered, as he realized what they were planning to do.
"You can't be a fox and a wolf." The pale boy says. The boy who had been laying face down on the ground leaped up and bit the Nogitsune in the arm, who hadn't seen him coming. Alec's fingers twitch, wanting to pierce an arrow through the werewolf, but he couldn't, knowing the werewolf was trying to rid his friend of the Nogitsune. The Nogitsune screamed in pain and defeat, when the other girl impaled him with her katana, and he fell to the ground.
Alec felt impressed. In all his years of being a Shadowhunter, he had never heard of any stories that had managed to defeat a Nogitsune without any casualties.
A fly escaped the mouth of the Nogitsune, seeming to look for it's freedom, when the werewolf he was supposed to kill a month ago, the one he now knew to be Isaac, caught the fly in a wooden box. The group of teenagers looked at him, as he looked back up at them.
"I figured you guys didn't have a fly swatter with you." He joked.
The void gagged and went berserk, until he stopped moving, when suddenly his face cracked, and burst into dust as he fell to the ground, leaving only ashes as proof he had been there.
"I suppose he didn't think it was funny." Said the pale boy, who had just seen his lookalike shatter to dust. He looked up. "Anyone got a vacuum?" The group started laughing, mostly out of relief, when they heard someone shout.
"A little help please!"
He recognized the voice to be from Allison, as his attention got drawn towards where she was. Allison was backing up from 4 of the Oni, as the 2 werewolves and the girl with the katana ran to her aid.
From a distance, he was watching the scene play out before his eyes, and prepared himself to fight by nocking an arrow on his bow, aiming for the Oni closest to him. Just as he saw Allison firing off her first arrow, which he could only hope was dipped in silver first, he heard a scream that made him wish he had had earplugs with him.
