My History with Zelda

I've been a fan of Nintendo games since I was a little kid. I grew up with games like Super Mario Bros 3, Mario Sunshine, and Luigi's Mansion. One day, I went to some other kid's birthday party, walked into a room and boom: I saw one of the coolest games I had ever seen, Super Smash Brothers Melee.

I just remember being mind blown seeing so many video game characters in one game. I had already played games that featured quite a few of them: Donkey Kong, Mario, Peach, Luigi, Yoshi, Bowser, and Mr Game And Watch. There were also a few characters that I recognized from schoolyard culture like the Pokemon characters. That being said, I had no idea who most of the characters were.

When I eventually got my hands on the game, I ended up playing it for years not knowing who anyone was. The most information I had on the other characters came from the information on their Smash Trophies. Also, hilariously, for the longest time I thought Kirby was a Pokemon.

I actually got pretty interested in a select few of the characters, probably the best example being Fox McCloud. I did end up buying a Star Fox game a year or so later: Star Fox Assault.

However, one character I never really thought too much about was Link. Upon first impression he just seemed like a character heavily inspired by Legolas from Lord of the Rings. It wasn't until I was in middle school that I played my first Zelda game: Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.

Since then I've played what I believe to be a grand total of eight Zelda games, and of the eight that I've played, I can confidently say I've only enjoyed three of them. It's safe to say that Zelda, as a franchise, is a bit of a hit or miss for me.
