I was playing the game on the Ultimate Genesis collection on the X-Box 360. I can't testify to how well the original genesis version of the game controlled, or how other ports of the game may control, but I had a bit of difficulty figuring out the controls to this game: to the point that I actually had to look up a walkthrough to figure out some of the game's controls.
For instance, in order to dispel a spirit, the player has to press all three action buttons at the same time. If I recall, the game does explain this earlier in the game, but I admittedly took a break from the game and came back to it on a later date, and had no idea how to control the game. Some of the game's controls are just not very intuitive.
I do commend the game for doing as much as it could with what few buttons it had on the original Genesis controller. The control scheme, like every other aspect of the game, tries to be the most it possibly can, but unfortunately it didn't work in this case.
I can confidently say that the control scheme was the only issue I had while playing Beyond Oasis.
To anyone who is considering playing the game, I highly recommend looking up the game's controls and getting them down before immersing yourself in the game.
