The next day me and Jug met at our annual lunch time table however today it was a little quiet. It was just me and Juggie, seen as Veronica and Archie were spending some time together elsewhere.
Veronica had been acting strange ever since the fight between Jughead and Archie yesterday. She had been avoiding me and had been 'out' nearly every lunchtime for a while now. It was all very odd.
"Where do you think Veronica is today?" Said Juggie, interrupting my thoughts.
"No idea, she hasn't even spoken to me this week. After the incident in the woods she just started totally blanking me." I replied, slightly upset.
"Hey Betts, her loss." Said Juggie, placing his arm lightly over my shoulder and pulling me closer to him.
"I guess." I said, smiling up at him.
Suddenly, out of the blue Archie and Veronica stormed over to our table.
"Hey guys." I greeted them, after a few very awkward seconds of silence.
"Hey." They both mumbled, sitting down on the bench across from us. Archie leaning his arms on the table, Veronica's sharply by her sides under the table.
"So... where have you been?" I asked them, after even more of an awkward silence.
The only sound that could be heard was Juggie's notorious munching and crunching on his fries as yet more silence ensued.
Finally, Archie lifted his head up from looking at the table and with glistening eyes turned to stare at Veronica.
"Why don't you tell them Ronnie?" Said Archie bitterly.
"Tell them what?" Replied Veronica, in an innocent yet unbelievable whisper.
"You know what!" Spat Archie uncontrollably.
I shot a glance towards Juggie for support and he took my hand from under the table holding it tightly.
As Veronica opened her mouth to speak her eyes began to glitter a watery hazel.
"I...I..." She stuttered, seeming unable to get her words out.
Juggie's thumb stroked my hand as we awaited Veronica's revery.
"It was Cheryl hiding in the bush." She said finally.
I looked up at Juggie perplexed, why did it matter? He just stared down at me offering me what support he had left to offer.
"Tell the truth Ronnie! The whole truth!" Erupted Archie, staring into the distance.
Whatever this was, this battle was clearly Veronica's to fight.
"But...I made her do it." Veronica replied guiltily.
"What!" I cried, falling back a little releasing my hand from Juggie's.
I could hardly breath. Why, just why?
Juggie's arm stabled me as I almost staggered off the back of the bench.
"B I'm sorry, I can't do this." She said, getting up and running of into the distance.
"Archie, did Veronica do anything else?" Asked Jughead, now holding me closely as I cried on his shoulder, whilst I gripped onto his denim jacket in anger.
"I don't know." He said simply, getting up from the table. "But I'm going to find out." He continued, then leaving following in the direction of Veronica.
Now the air was silent once again, apart from my heavy sobbing. I was so disappointed in her, I just couldn't understand why she would do this to me.
"Hey Betts, it's going to be alright I promise." Said Juggie, trying to be supportive even though there was no conviction in his statement. He didn't even believe what he was saying himself.
"It's not Juggie. Its not." I sobbed, whilst he held me protectively.
"You'll always have me no matter what. I'm not going anywhere. I promise." Said Juggie, tilting my head up with his index finger and staring deeply into my eyes.
I looked up at him, understanding how truly terrible the situation was but at the same time appreciating Juggie's support.
I don't know what I'd do without him.
I had this sudden realisation that me and Jug were joined my an unbreakable bond that no one could break, especially not Veronica.
No matter what, we were in this together.
Until the very end.
