she knew what he did to hannah baker and although she wasn't proud or supported what he did, she still understood why he did it. she understood him and felt that he was misunderstood. but she could never let him near her for although he has a kind heart she's been through hell as well. she has a hard time accepting people into her life and especially into her heart. 

but he's not going to give up this time. because although hannah was very special to him, mia jane halter was even more special. she was different than all the other girls. it was true that she may have similar qualities with hannah but he knew he was different than her and all the other girls on campus. 

mia jane halter. daughter of daniel halter aka the ceo of halter studios; one of the biggest movie studios in the country. at first many believed she was the type of rich girl you'd see in a mean girls movie but she wasn't that girl. 

mia was a very quiet girl her freshman year at liberty high but of course as she reached her senior year she became good friends with a few people; including hannah baker. she was very kind and always supported her friends who were in the school's sports teams at their games just as hannah did. both her and hannah were almost inseparable but that didn't mean every thing was perfect.

many believed that it was only hannah who felt the need to end her life but little did anyone know, mia was crying for help as well and she still is. her parents' marriage started to fall apart during her sophomore year and both her and her siblings were very affected by their parents' split but she acted like everything was fine so that no one would pity her. just like zach she too felt lonely but she put on a facade to hide the fact that she was lonely. she just wanted someone to be there for her. as hannah started to become more and more distant from her other friends, she became more distant to mia as well and that's when she felt the most lonely. 

zach knew how she felt. he knew how both of them felt. that's why he is now determined to make sure mia never feels lonely. he never wants what happened to hannah to happen to mia; because he truly loves her more than she could ever know.
