In her sleep, Hazel found herself standing at a crossroad. On the left side, there was a dimly lit path that lead down a neighborhood street, the asphalt winding down until it couldn't be seen.
The other side was the bay of a lake, where three docks extended out into the water. Boats floated silently at their docking areas.
The latter path seemed rather peaceful, and temptation drew Hazel to it, but the street path had something...a bit more intriguing. A small brown haired girl with wide, unseeing eyes walked slowly towards her. In her hand, she carried a stuffed animal. Her shuffling footsteps scratched Hazel's ears, and instinct told the girl to run.
Now, Hazel wasn't the brightest bulb on the tree. Instead of letting her gut tell her what was right, she narrowed her eyes and walked towards the mysterious girl. She stopped when she began to see the raggedy hair up close. Who was this girl, and where did she come from? As the thoughts crossed Hazel's mind, the little girl shuffled closer until she stood directly in front of Hazel.
"Why, aren't you lovely?" The girl said, her voice dull. Hazel, though surprised at the girl's vocabulary, didn't think much of the statement. Instead, she only thought of how to get the girl home, as there seemed to be no adults nearby.
"Who are you?" Hazel asked timidly, unsure of what to do. "I'm Mae. You are Hazel." Came the slow reply.
"Um...well yeah I'm Hazel. Are you lost or something? Do you need help?" She was lost for words, unsure of what else to say. Mae simply shook her head and gave a light little laugh.
"Me? I'm not the one who needs help." Mae shuffled past Hazel, shoving her out of the way and beginning to hum a soft little tune.
Rather confused, Hazel blinked once, finding herself in her bedroom once again. The dream haunted her, permanently settling into her mind.
She tried to fall back asleep, but the words of the young girl Mae continued to ring in here ears.
"I'm not the one who needs help."
