Hazel sat on the edge of a rickety old dock, her fishing pole in hand. Music played softly from the device in her bag, and the sun shone from behind her, making the whole scene absolutely perfect. It wasn't too hot or too cold outside, and Hazel needed that to keep her mind off her missing sister.
"Oh, Hazel!" May exclaimed, grinning as she walked across the dock to sit next to the girl. Hazel said nothing, she didn't even turn to look at the younger girl. Keeping her eyes on the water, she waited for a bite on her line.
On another dock, not at all far from where Hazel and May sat, April watched her sister from an old red and white boat. It dipped in the water, and April watched carefully, feeling lightly seasick from the boat's motions, even though it was tied to a dock.
"Hazel!" She called, leaning against the back. No response.
With a sigh, the girl exited the boat and walked slowly over to her sister's dock, stopping when she saw something silver glittering in the grass. May looked up just as April picked up the piece of silver. "One second..." She chuckled nervously to Hazel, who did nothing in response.
April noticed that as soon as she lifted the necklace, the black and white around her began to fade, pixelating into the greens and blues of Hazel's world. "Hazel!" She exclaimed, stepping forward. Only, before anything else could happen, May snatched the necklace from the girl's grasp, hissing at April as she did so. Quickly, the black and white returned, and when Hazel whipped her head around, there was nobody there. Not even May.
Angrily, May whipped around to return to Hazel, dropping the necklace again in the process. Only this time, April didn't notice.
Swearing she heard her name being called, Hazel looked up from the lake and examined the land around her, trying to find the source of the voice. There was nobody there, but she felt strangely unsettled. "That's my cue," the girl sighed, reeling her line in and shutting the tackle box in front of her. She stood up to leave, but noticed a glimmering silver chain in the grass.
"What's this?" Hazel said aloud as she bent down and picked up the necklace. As soon as her skin touched the chain, the world became black and white, and on the picnic table in front of her, a group of children sat with their backs to her. They turned around on sync, and opened their eyes. Each of the children had black eyes with no whites. As soon as their eyelids opened, it was like staring into the soul of the devil. Fear sank into Hazel's body as the children all tilted their heads at the same time. "Welcome to the Beyond," they exclaimed, their voices molding into one. It completely went over Hazel's head that one of the terrifying children was her beloved sister, April.
One by one, the children raised themselves up and off the picnic table and began walking towards her. In a panic, Hazel threw the necklace at them and ran away, shaking as she did so. The black and white immediately disappeared, and when Hazel looked back, the picnic table and the surrounding area was completely empty, but her skin prickled anyway.
"Welcome to the Beyond?" Was that where the children were? What was it? Why was the necklace changing the view of the world? Most importantly, where was it now?
