They could have stared out that window for eons but Riojme broke Jake’s silent meditation.
“I hope Ming shared my message with you. The Aye told me that if I served well on a mission, my parents would be released. I’ve been here for more than 6 months. Jang is one of the Aye’s Agents. Agents are humans that the Aye picks to work on its behalf on special important assignments.”
Jake was surprised. “I thought the Aye didn’t allow people to do anything important.”
Ming spoke up. “That’s just your interpretation. The majority of people would like go to parties, socialize, work on their artistic pursuits but some people want to do more. Of course some people want to do things that would harm others. But there are a few, that the Aye trusts, who get assignments to help the human race. You didn’t meet any scientists or engineers but that didn’t mean there weren’t any. It’s just that there aren’t as many as in your time.”
Jang continued Ming’s thought: “Our assignment here is to study the intelligent aliens that live on Replin and provide the Aye with any information we think would be valuable. Of course, the Aye can monitor what’s going on from above, but it values a human’s perspective on things. Riojme and I have been studying the aliens for 6 months up here in this space station and the Aye has been studying them for far longer. The Aye wants you to make first contact with them so that we can study them in person.”
