Harpers POV
I watched the world fly past me from out the window. Sophia was asleep next to me and the cop was quietly singing with the radio. I sighed.A cop had found us and we are driving to the police station now. He said is name was Nick. Nick seemed nice for the most part. Nick was the first to break the silence.
"Why were you out in the woods?" He quizzed.
"I am trying to find my parents." I said, blankly. He nodded like I said something that wasn't crazy."Why? What are their names?"
Pat and Jen Brown." I said, completely ignoring the first question.
"Oh them! They are in prison for life. For the murder of a little girl." He replied, pulling into the police station. No one said anything as we carried Sophia inside and sat down. We resumed talking when Sophia was asleep again.
"My parents did nothing wrong." I spat.
"They killed h-" He started. I cut him off.
"The gun shot sounded before they went over there! Are you an idiot? It wasn't them!" I screamed. Sophia woke up and started to cry. I ignored her."Did you ever think about searching the whole house? Jane was my friend. My parents would never do anything to make me sad! Ask Janes mom! I dare you!" I yelled. Nick looked nervous, almost scared.
"Tomorrow, we'll bring them in for a trial. You'll have to speak though." Nick said softly. My insides were jumping with joy but my body was calm.
"But, you can't wear...that." He said, pointing to my dirty clothes.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know I was supposed to wear a ball gown to run away. My bad!" I said, sarcastically. Nick rolled his eyes."Come with me, we'll have to go shopping." Nick said and took me and Sophia out to his car once again.
---------
Nick took us to Target, where I got a dress (pic) / and some shoes. By the time we were done, it was already 6.
"Where are we going to sleep?"
"You can come to my house. My wife can dress you and stuff tomorrow."I nodded. The trial was at 9:00 am. And I wasn't near nervous at all. Sophia seemed kind of distant after I explained that I would see my parents. I felt kind of bad. Her childhood wasn't all that great. And that's when I thought mine was bad. Which, it was.
"Hi, guys!" Nick's wife, Ashlynn, greeted. She was pretty. Long blonde hair went down to her ribs and her blue eyes sparkled. Ashlynn took us to the guest room where we would be staying. When we were settled, she closed the door and left the room.
"You never danced." Sophia said. I got out of bed and did my solo. She watched in awe as I moved gracefully across the floor.
---------
"Girls wake up!" Ashlynn shook me slightly. My eyes opened and I shot up. I didn't wait for Sophia or Ashlynn or anyone. Today was it. Today was the day. I finally got to see my parents.
I went to my bag and put on my dress. Ashlynn met me in the bathroom to do my hair and a little bit of makeup. I went downstairs and ate what Nick had prepared.
After what seemed like hours of waiting for everyone to be ready, we got on the car and drove. The car ride was for 45 minutes and it was nearing 9:00. I began to get anxious and annoyed. I could hardly sit still.
I tried to calm myself down by messing with the curls in Sophia's hair, but it didn't work. Then, I sang to myself. Which calmed me down long enough for us to get there.
As we pulled into the parking lot, I saw about 8 police cars and their officers. We found a spot to park and began walking towards the huge building.
When we got in there, I was overwhelmed with feelings: happiness, sadness, fear, nervousness. But mostly, I was nervous. This trial determined if I was staying with my parents or going back to the orphanage.
"Excuse me, Officer Nick?" A woman, with a blue and black uniform on said. She pulled him aside and whispered things to him. I only caught a few words: Pat and Jen, escaped, reschedule, and looking. Nick nodded and turned back to me.
"Harper, your parents have escaped the jail they were sent to. The police are looking for them. You can't see them. We have to reschedule the trial."
I could feel the tears falling down my face as we walked back to the car.Hey guys! How are you! I hope you enjoyed it!! -Ella
