I pushed my yellow earbuds into my ears and pulled out my skull-white iPod. I scrolled to the playlist "Top Vocaloid" and hit "Furan Furan Zombie." Sachi and Ceoil Eika serenaded to me in Japanese about rotten zombies. Then I reached into my black laptop-bag for some reading material. Ah, Vampire Knight. That will work nicely.

Before long in my reading, I was interrupted. I felt my neck prickle, and had the distinct feeling that someone was watching me. I looked up to see a hot girl staring at my manga. She looked like the cheerleader type. I flipped the book over to look at the cover. Maybe she liked the pretty-boys.

She gave a little jump. "Oh, uh, sorry," she said. "I, uh, I was... I gotta go."

She ran off, her skirt flapping in the wind. I shook my head and went back to reading. Cheerleaders.

It's not that I hate cheerleaders. It's they who have a problem with me. I'm a nerd, if the manga and vocaloid wasn't enough of a hint. Plus, I'm new to the school. A popular shouldn't give me a second glance, unless they were weirded out by my platinum hair with the bright blue streak. But she did.

What the frak!

I had to keep telling myself it was the manga. I don't think she looked at my face once.

Well, maybe she did.

Besides, what did it matter to me? It's not like I liked her or anything. I had no reason to; I had only seen her. I knew nothing about her except how she looked and that little stutter she gave me.

I'll admit, the way her straight hair swayed down her back turned me on.

No, no, no! I can't start fantasizing about the most popular girl in school on my first day. I'm a freaking nerd. She'll be mocking my sorry butt if I don't knock it off.

Of course, she had to be in my homeroom. How cliché. I sat by the door, my usual choice. It was near the front and off to the side. She stood in the back, giggling and flirting with boys. She was practically in the opposite corner. I thought for sure she'd sit there, but when the bell rang, she moved to a seat in the same row as mine, although still in the back. I kept my eyes trained forward the whole time, but I felt her looking at me every now and then.

I can't say it enough. What. The. Frak!

I high-tailed it out of there as soon as class was over. I had art next. No way was she taking that class. But she cornered me in the hall. Was she a freaking ninja or something?

"Hi," she said, looking around to make sure no one saw her. Hard for them to do, since we were hidden by a pillar. If I didn't know better, I swear she was going to jump me.

I didn't dignify her with an answer.

"I... saw what you were reading," she went on. A small smile turned up the corner of her cute mouth. Oh great, here comes the mocking I anticipated. Of course she wasn't interested in me. "What's your name?"

I scoffed. "What does it matter to you?"

She blushed. "I just want to know, okay. You new around here?"

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah. Moved in last week. I'm guessing you're not."

Her smile widened. "No, I've lived here all my life."

"Look, what is it you want? I have class in a minute." She looked around again. I loved the way her hair swished over her shoulders.

I slapped myself mentally.

"My name's Addison. We should talk some time."

"Isn't that what we're doing?"

She giggled. Freaking cheerleader. "Yeah. See ya around." She finally walked away, but turned back to add, "Next time, I want to know your name."

I stood there, staring after her, my heart beating like crazy. I didn't move until the bell rang, making me jump.
