I stood bored in the lunch line. Today we were having clumps of red crap with filthy strings of yellow pasta, otherwise known as the school's spaghetti and meatballs.
I wondered if Ashley would be here. Probably not. I didn't know what classes we were in together, but the truth is I hadn't seen her since math.
Then a thought hit me.
Every school year Addison, Ashley and I are together in the lunch line. I knew why Ashley wasn't here, but where was Addison?
I looked around and saw her, already with the so-called spaghetti and meatballs. That was odd. We were always together in the lunch line, like I said. She shouldn't be out already.
"Ahem."
I turned and saw the cook staring at me through her old glasses with her dull brown eyes. Embarrassed, I held out my tray for her to slap down the crap they called food.
I walked over to Addison, but she left as soon as I reached her.
Again. Odd.
Instead of following, I watched. She was heading towards some guy with a book next to his food.
Must be a new guy. But this wasn't any new guy. Nobody sat near him, and that book had....was it Chinese on the cover? He had a white iPod in his hand.
A nerd.
Addison was staring at him.
"Delilah!"
I turned and saw Ashley. I expected her to punch me or something, but she just said, "By talk, I meant talk. Not fight."
I sighed. "Okay. What?"
"See that guy over there with the iPod? You can easily tell he's a geek or something, right?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
"I saw Addison flirting with him before second period."
I couldn't say anything. It felt like I'd been punched in the chest. Addison, flirting with a nerd?
"She's with Liam," I said, trying to sound calm.
"Are you two gonna sit or not?"
Ashley grabbed my hand before I could see who told us off. She sat near Addison and the nerd with the iPod.
"My name is Samuel," I heard the nerd say.
"So, Samuel, what's that you're reading?"
Ashley's eyes widened.
"It's called manga. Japanese comic books."
"Did she just ask what he was reading?" I whispered to Ashley.
"I think she did."
I turned. Addison and Samuel were sitting together. Addison was asking a bunch of questions and Samuel was answering them, sounding kinda surprised.
Addison saw me staring at them. Samuel looked up, too. Addison blushed, her cheeks were as red as tomatoes.
She stood up. "I have to....go to the bathroom." Quickly she fled the lunchroom.
I was furious.
