"The one who falls and gets up is so much stronger than the one who never fell."

Layla's POV

"So, I actually do know why my parents left me." I signed to Aleksis shyly. She gave me a look that told me to continue. "I'm a werewolf, too." I signed slowly.

"Oh, we already knew that." She responded, without telling Spencer what I had said. "But that still doesn't tell me exactly why they left you."

"Because I shifted for the first time." I told her. Her eyes grew wide and her mouth hung slightly open as she stared at me for a second. I glanced at Spencer, who was looking between the two of us with a curious look on his face. Aleksis filled Spencer in and a look of realization crossed his face.

"That's...she can't...her mate." Spencer responded. Even though, I only caught a few words, I knew exactly what he was talking about. I had read something about werewolf mates a couple of years ago in a book I took from my parents' bedroom.

Spencer is my mate? I questioned myself. It would explain the unusual behavior, on both of our parts.

I heard an unusual purring sound in the back of my head. I figured it must be the wolf side of me liking the idea of us finding a mate.

"Wait, how old are you?" Aleksis asked.

"I'm nineteen." I signed, giving her a curious look. She looks at me with a shocked look on her face. "What?"

"You're supposed to shift for the first time when you're sixteen, not nineteen." She said. She started talking with Spencer, and that same angry look appeared on his face again. I let out a small whimper as I looked down at the floor, not able to see either of them. A pair of shoes came into my line of sight and my chin was pulled up by a gentle hand. I looked up to see Spencer's green eyes, his chocolate brown hair falling over his face a little.

He shook his head before I read his lips as he slowly spoke, "Don't hide from me. I won't hurt you." I nodded as I looked into his caring eyes. When he looked at me, all anger vanished from his eyes.

He stepped away from me again, letting Aleksis come back into my view. "We're going to bring you to the pack doctor to get you checked out. Okay?" She signed. I nodded, silently having  panic attack as I thought about what that would mean.

They would see all my scars.

They would see the bruises from a beating I got a few days ago.

They would see how malnourished I actually was.

They would see everything.

I let out a shaky sigh as a red cross came into view, just down the hall from Spencer's office. Aleksis gave me a reassuring nod and I felt shocks go through my back as Spencer placed his hand on my lower back, guiding me into the doctor's office. I looked around at the very plain room. There were a few chairs, with a couple of tables sitting next to them. The walls were a slightly off-white color, and there were a few paintings of different owls on them.

We walked up to the small, little desk, and Spencer started speaking to the lady sitting there. It wasn't long before she was scurrying off. Spencer still hadn't removed his hand from my back. It seemed as though he was not only trying to calm me but himself as well.

Soon, the lady came back, ushering us behind a door a, down a small hallway, and into a quaint, little white room. There was an examining table, a few cabinets, a sink, and a small computer. Spencer gently pushed me towards the table, and I climbed the single step and sat down. I looked down at my hands, picking at my nails, just noticing how dirty they were.
