"The strongest people are not those who show strength in front of us but those who win battles we know nothing about."

Spencer's POV

I sighed heavily as I looked at the lab results. My mate's parents had been giving her Wolf's Bane to keep her from shifting. They must've missed a dose or something, and that caused her to shift.

"How are we going to get the rest of it out of her system?" I asked Dr. Andrews. We were currently sitting in her office. Yesterday, after about three hours of not hearing anything from our librarian, I went to check up on Layla. I ended up finding her in the back corner of the small library, books surrounding her, as she slept with a book in her lap.

"We would have to get her permission for what we would have to do. I'm not comfortable-" I cut her off.

"I don't care what you're comfortable with. I need the damned Wolf's Bane out of my mates system." I said with a stern voice.

"Yes, Alpha." She bowed slightly.

I nodded at her and left her office. I walked out of our small hospital, and up to my room. Last night, I had carried her up to my room and laid her gently in my bed. I decided to sleep on the recliner I had in my room, even with my wolfs' protests, not wanting to freak her out. I opened the door to my bedroom, and there she lay, in the middle of my California King sized bed.

'She looks so small in comparison to our bed.' My wolf commented.

I didn't say anything as I shut the bedroom door and made my way to the side of my bed. I sat down gently, not wanting to wake her. I sat for a second, just watching her, watching her breathing. I watched as her breathing quickened, meaning she was beginning to wake up.

She stretched, turning her body to face me as she laid on her back. This was the most relaxed I'd seen her in the last few days.

This didn't last long, though.

As soon as she saw me, she started freaking out. She scurried backwards towards the edge of the bed. I reached out for her, trying to get her to stop, but she didn't understand and kept going. She fell off the bed with a loud thud. I rushed to the other side of the bed to see if she was alright. She was curled up in a ball, pressed against the wall. I walked slowly towards her.

"I'm not going to hurt you." I mouthed to her slowly. She blinked as if she was realizing where she was. Layla let out a deep breath, as she stood up. "Are you okay?" I asked her. She nodded.

I motioned for her to follow me. I brought her to the end of the bed and sat her down, then grabbed a notebook and a pencil for her. I handed it to her and she started writing.

"How did I get in here? I fell asleep in the library." The paper read.

"I carried you in here last night." I wrote back. She gave me a weary look. "Let's go get you some breakfast."

Layla's POV

I followed behind Spencer as he lead me to the kitchen. I was a little weary about being alone with him, but I didn't show it. I knew better than to show my emotions around anyone. Whenever I did show someone my emotions, I was usually punished. I stared at the ground as we walked. I could see the back of Spencer's feet and that's all I needed to know where I was going.

When we made it to the kitchen, he motioned for me to sit on one of the stools at the island. Spencer started pulling things out of the cabinets and the fridge, so I took the time to look around at my surroundings. The cabinets were black with little circular nobs for handles. The counters we a white marble, and the stove was black. The gray refrigerator was off in the corner of the spacious kitchen.

I looked back at Spencer. He was standing in front of the stove, his back to me. I sat there, watching him move, watching the way his muscles strained the maroon t-shirt he was wearing. What am I doing? I shook my head and looked down at my hands.

I felt something take over my body. It felt like I was just watching from the backseat as somebody else drove. I felt myself get up from the stool and walk over to Spencer.

"Hi, there. I'm Abby." I heard my own voice as I watched Spencer turn to look at me in surprise. Wait, how can I hear? I'm not in my wolf form.

Because when I'm in control, your human body has it's hearing back. A voice different from my own rang through my head.

You must be my wolf. I stated.

Yup! She replied very energetically.

A look of realization crossed over Spencer's face as he looked at us again. He went to move when Abby reached up and grabbed his arm.

"You don't need to write anything down, sweetheart. As long as I'm in control, these ears of mine work." She says, pointing to my ears.

"Well," Spencer responds. His voice is the most heavenly sound that I have ever heard, "I'm going to guess you are Layla's wolf." He finishes. Abby nods.

"And while my human counterpart is shy, I am not." She says, while wrapping our arms around Spencer's neck. His hands go to my waist, and the sparks that shoot through my body are intoxicating.

What are you doing?! I practically yell at my wolf.

Getting what I've been waiting our entire life for. She states firmly.

Before I can do anything, she leans up on her tip toes and kisses Spencer on the lips. I try to take back control of my body. After a few moments of fighting with Abby, I finally gain control again. I push away from Spencer, the world going mute again. As I back away from him, I feel something hit the back of my leg. I watch as Spencer gets farther away from me before feeling a sharp pain in the back of my head and my teeth click together as my body hits the tile floor. I try to move, but it causes too much pain so I stay still. The edges of my vision start to go black. I try to clear my vision, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I feel my body being pulled onto something. The sparks that I feel tell me it's Spencer. I turn my head a little, pain shooting through my head and neck the entire time, and get a glimpse of Spencer, just as my vision goes black and I feel myself drifting from consciousness.
