Oh my gosh.
Her voice is like an angel.
Not knowing what to say, or even having a plan in the first place, I just go quiet and unknowingly breathe creepily into the phone. The shirt makes me sound like darth vader.
"Hello?" She says again, her voice more urging this time.
My heart pounds, and I open my mouth to say something.
"A pervert with a blocked number..." She interrupts and hangs up quickly.
I'm not a pervert! I just got nervous and didn't know what to say, that's all! It's not my fault that I may breathe a little heavily...
I take a deep breathe, feeling the heat rising in my cheeks. I'm obviously blushing, and I don't even know why. Maybe it's just her voice.. Or just everything.
This time, with more courage, I dial her number again and wait. It takes a few more rings, but she picks up.
"What do you want?" She asks, clearly irritated now.
"Sorry for sounding creepy." I say awkwardly, sitting in the darkness of my room. I had turned all the lights out so if she happened to look out her window to mine she wouldn't see anything.
"Whatever. Who are you?" She asks, calming down again.
I hesitate. "Can't say." I finally mumble out.
"That's not creepy at all." She retorts, and I can almost hear her eyes rolling.
"Are you going out with that annoying jock already?" I blurt out, and slap myself for being dumb.
"Excuse me?" She asks, her voice raising high at the end of her question. "How would you know these things?"
I pause again. "Coincidence."
"Don't say those things. For real, how did you get my number? If I don't get a real answer, I'll Hang up!" She says back, knowing all the right things to say to provoke me.
I glance out my window and see her shadow pacing back and forth, then retreat back. "Someone dropped a piece of paper with a number and name on the ground-"
"So you decided to creep that person out by calling them? Smart idea." She interrupts again.
"No that's not it!"
"So you also know my name, huh?" Iris asks.
This is not going the way I planned. I thought things would go so smoothly. I blame Kai. When in doubt, blame Kai.
"Yeah. Iris." I say, then instantly regret it. Could I get any more stalker-ish?!
"This is weird. And by the way, I'm not dating anyone. I don't know why you'd know anything about that though..." She trails off, getting quieter.
"Good. He's not good enough for you. You could do much better." I say, involuntarily smiling. Why do I feel so strongly for this girl...
She laughs from the other end of the line. It's short and sweet. "And what makes you thing that?"
"Well, you just sound like it. It's the way you present yourself. I don't know how to explain it..." I'm getting better at talking to her. I'm not fumbling with my words or mumbling, and I'm talking good Korean to her without accidentally mixing some Chinese. I feel accomplished.
She laughs again, this time it seems more real. "Thanks stalker. Now since you found my number on the floor from this jock, you must go to my school." She says, seeming to challenge me.
I freeze, twirling the phone cord around my finger. She's quick, and too smart for me.
She's already onto me.
"You do!" Iris says at my hesitation. "Just so you know, mr. Stalker, I'm really smart."
"Hey, I'm not a stalker!" I reply, sticking my bottom lip in a pout. I never wanted to come off like this, but it was an accident... At least it's going better than before..
"Says the guy who is anonymously calling a girl at midnight. Who also sounds like he's holding a rag to his mouth." She sounds as if she's enjoying taunting me this way. I kind of am too, it's pretty funny. Even the way she talks is cute, especially the way her voice gets a little higher at the end of her questions, and how she drags out some of her words.
"Actually it's a shirt." I say matter-of-factly, and give a faint laugh as she does too.
"You're creepy." She says even though she's laughing. "You know, I could call the police for this, and they could trace your number? Then I'd know who you are, and you could get in trouble." Her time goes serious.
I stay quiet for a moment, unsure what to say. I never thought of any sort of consequence of doing this. "You wouldn't..." I mutter under my breathe, actually hoping she doesn't. I really wouldn't want to get caught for this. Glancing at the clock that reads 12:15, I yawn. I usually go to bed early so I can be ready for practice, but I couldn't get iris off of my mind, and well, here I am doing this crazy stunt.
"You tired, stalker boy?" The girl asks, giggling a bit. I imagine her cute eye smile as she laughs which brings a smile to my face again.
"Yeah, I am actually." I reply, rubbing my eyes.
"Long day of stalking?" She continues to tease, then yawns herself, as if my yawn was contagious. Or she was mocking me, I'm not sure. Whatever, it still sounded cute.
"Sure." I roll my eyes and pull my knees to my chest.
"Hey, just so you know, I will find out who you are. I'm determined." She says, and I can hear the seriousness in her tired voice.
"Uh huh. Have fun." I laugh again and look out the window, seeing she turned her light off soon.
"See you tomorrow, creeper." And with that, she hangs up. I can't tell if it was playful or if she was being mean..
I stare at the landline for a minute, then put it back on the receiver and lay in bed.
My hair sprawls out on my pillow as I plop into my bed, my body laying like a rag doll as I just stare at the ceiling.
What have I gotten myself into?
