Chapter Six
Annabelle's POV
I run as fast as I can, away from there. Away from them. Never again will I see them. It hurts a little, yes, but not as much as it hurt to stay there.
I go wherever my feet take me, not looking back.
Their hurtful words flash across my mind.
My feet carry me faster, where to, I don't know.
My body slams into something hard.
My eyes trail up to what I hit.
A door. Red, polished, new.
Belonging to a nice stone house, unlike my shabby old wooden hut.
I knock twice on the wooden door, my knuckles hurting as I do.
I wait.
One minute, two minutes, three.
My eyelids droop down, unable to hold themselves up.
I slip into a deep sleep, unable to stay awake.

My eyes flutter open.
I lay in a neat cushioned bed, in a place unknown.
I look down at my clothes, finding a nice silk gown.
My eyes search the room, where there was a white dresser with a mirror attached.
I see someone, but it's not me. It's a girl, young. Nice clothing, brushed hair, but tears trailing down her face. I blink, but the girl stays. Realization hits me right in the face. I run out of the room, not wanting to see myself again.
My feet travel down a flight of stairs, almost tripping me in the process.
I stumble through what seems to be a living room, with a girl, looking about ten, with her head in her mothers lap. The woman is stroking her daughters hair calmly, with a caring smile on her face.
Painful memories tear away at my soul, and I try not to let myself break down.
"Wh- Who are you?" I choke out.
The woman jumps, but doesn't awaken the sleeping child. She realizes the words came from me, and a wave of worry crosses her lovely features.
She quietly rises from the couch, and the girls head falls onto the soft cushions. The woman slowly walks over to me, and I shrink back.
"I'm not going to hurt you, I promise. I found you on the porch in the pouring rain. Are you lost?"
"I- no. I.." I don't want to tell her about me running away from my home.
"Where are your parents?" She kneels down, so her face is right in front of mine.
"I don't have any parents." I whisper, looking at the carpeted floor. I look back to the woman.
She looks hurt. As if she just got stabbed in the stomach. Her eyebrows knit together, and her mouth is slightly agape. She holds her arms open, and motions me forward.
I approach her slowly, to find myself cradled in her arms.
"I'll be your new parent." She says softly as she rubs my back.
She takes me upstairs, to the room I woke up in.
She puts me on the bed, kisses my forehead, and leaves.
'I will not disappoint this one. I will make her happy with me. I will be perfect this time.' I think as I slowly drift off to sleep.
I wake up to the sound of the shower running.
A clean looking Eleanor strolls into the room with a towel wrapped around herself.
"Wha- Eleanor?" I ask.
"Good morning, sleepy head." She says.
I yawn and pat the bed beside me.
She walks over and sits down.
"Why are you up so early?" I ask, dazed.
"Well there's this thing called work that I have to do today." She speaks, while ruffling my already messy hair.
"Shit. I got a job at the bakery and today's my first day." I lie.
"Why? You don't even need any money." She looks at my confusedly.
"Well you don't either." I reply.
"Sassy." She snaps her fingers.
I roll my eyes and leave the room, so she can get dressed.
I walk into the bathroom and brush my hair hurriedly, and walk back into my room and slip on some clothes.
I hear Eleanor mutter a goodbye, and mum arguing over breakfast.
Speed walking down the stairs and into the kitchen, I grab an apple and head out the door before my mother scolds me.
"Damn, you get ready fast." Eleanor gapes as I slam the door.
"Past experiences." I reply, thinking back to when I rushed out the old hut, fast and quiet, as to not wake my sleeping 'parents.'
My sister stares at the ground with her fingers on her chin.
She snaps out of her daze, and looks back up to me.
"I better get to work now, you know how Niall's dad always yells at me for being late." She says as she rushes away.
My eyes follow her until she's out of sight.
I hop along the pebbled path, up to the entrance to the woods, to the peace I've always dreamed of. I slip through the trees, finding myself at the lake that Mum always took Eleanor and me to when we were little.
My fingers scoop through the silken water, and I lay down on the soft grass. My eyes find the sky and stare at the clouds. I stay in that position for what seems like forever. My stomach grumbles, and I take it as a sign that I should go home and eat.

When I arrive home soon after leaving, I find both Niall and Eleanor at the table, munching on a bag of chips.
"Where's mum?" I ask.
Eleanor's eyes find mine, and a smile appears on her face.
Eleanor's POV
"She went to the market to go get some food." I reply, lying.
"Oh." Is all that escapes her mouth as she heads upstairs.
