Fitz frowned, peering at Sophie worriedly as she offered to go first. Why would Sophie go first? She would never do that, Fitz thought as their group sat down in a circle on the carpeted floor. His bewilderment deepened when Sophie shot him a nervous glance before suggesting Linh give her the first dare. So that was all they would exchange- fleeting glances and nervous smiles. Not the telepathic conversation professing undying love for each other as Fitz had fantasized of- perhaps his idea of how they would interact was far fetched. When did anything he ever hoped for develop into a reality? Fitz swallowed down hurt and confusion; did having a new set of friends make her suddenly realize she didn't want to be associated with him anymore? Staring into her eyes when he had told her, Fitz had felt so . . . connected . . . and now it felt as if there was a barrier between them- one he wasn't sure how to tear down. Fitz sighed, chiding himself. Get a grip, he thought, stiffening his resolve. If stony silence was all he would receive, Fitz supposed two could play the game.

"Sophie, truth or dare?" Fitz looked up, Linh's soft voice cutting through his train of thought.

Sophie glanced at Fitz nervously for a moment before she spoke, and, of course, Fitz's heart pounded like it did every. Single. Time. "Umm . . . dare," she replied, hands fidgeting.

Linh smiled evilly, pretending to crack her knuckles menacingly while Tam sent Sophie a pitying look beside his sister. "You'll regret that," he snorted.

"Aww Linh's too nice to give Foster anything good," Keefe chimed in, punching Sophie lightly on the shoulder, receiving only an annoyed scowl in return. "Wait till it's my turn."

"Can't wait," Sophie muttered sarcastically, rolling her eyes.

"You know you love me," Keefe said, mussing his blonde hair.

"I suppose I do," Sophie answered, glaring back at him. Fitz tried to ignore the pang of envy coursing through him, especially when Keefe slung his arm around Sophie's neck- and when she didn't pull away.

"I guess you don't know me too well then, Keefe," Linh said, shooting Keefe a scarily accurate representation of his trademark smirk. "Sophie you're in for a treat."

"Oh no," Sophie moaned, sighing.

"I dare you to . . ." Linh stroked a non existent beard thoughtfully. "How about we take a trip to the Sanctuary to visit Silveny."

"Why?"

"Sophie's going to take a bath in . . . well, let's say just say it'll be a sparkly surprise," Linh simpered, laughing when Sophie groaned loudly beside her.

"Ha Foster, I wonder who Glitter Butt will like now," Keefe smirked, nudging Sophie playfully, who only glared at him, dread slowly creeping across her face.

"My mom won't let us go anyway," she decided, folding her arms and looking relieved. Fitz privately hoped she would carry on with the dare; he knew it was wrong, but considering the way she had treated him so far, he wasn't so eager to jump in her defense either.

"Well I will." Fitz whirled, relaxing when Alden's kind face peeked out from behind the door. He shot his son a wink before turning to Sophie. "If they object, I'll convince them to allow you to go. Nothing wrong with a game of truth or dare," he added, aquamarine eyes sparkling mysteriously- Fitz wondered how long he had been listening outside the door.

Sophie groaned, shoving Keefe roughly by the shoulder when he snickered. "Please don't argue if she doesn't let us go," she begged, clasping her hands together pleadingly.

Patting her gently on the back, Alden laughed, the warm sound ringing loudly about the large room. "I wouldn't want to get in the middle of your fun," he said teasingly.
