A/N: OMG!!!! Nightfall came out and I just finished it!!!! It was amazing and I am so looking forward for the next book to come out, although I was kinda mad I got left on a cliffhanger. Let me know if you've finished reading it too and we can fangirl over it!! :D without further or do, here is chapter 10!
Fitz's grin vanished, stick-straight posture slumping. It was as if any excitement had gone with her absence, leaving him bored, empty . . . Fitz ran a palm over his forehead, rolling his eyes despite himself; obsessing over a girl was exactly the type of behavior he had always been determined not to carry out. It was the type of behavior Dex had first accused him of having, something Fitz had always been determined to prove wrong.
"Sad she's gone?" Fitz whirled, cringing at Dex's familiar voice. Before he could argue, Dex beckoned him over, sending him a reassuring smile.
"No, I just--"
"I get it." He held Fitz's gaze for a moment before turning towards Keefe and Tam. Fitz hesitated before plopping between Dex and Keefe, who were apparently in deep conversation. Although he only offered monosyllables, Tam seemed to be highly amused by its content, hand cupping his face, concealing half of the smirk with his left hand.
"What's new?" Fitz said, propping his head on his hand as he glanced at Dex curiously.
"We're discussing something of very high importance," Dex replied, grinning impishly and raising his eyebrows. "Keefe is a loser and doesn't know who to ask to the dance."
Keefe smirked, rolling his eyes. "I'm awesome," he simpered, studying his reflection in the glass table below him as he mussed his hair. "I'm just independent. You don't have enough courage to ask Biana, much less how to ask her."
Dex elbowed him in the stomach, cutting him off. "Hey! I never said I was going to ask her! I don't even want to ask her!"
"Wait." Fitz held his arms across Keefe's chest before he could speak, smiling slyly as he turned to face Dex. "You were planning to ask Biana?" he asked, furrowing his brow. Dex hadn't taken his eyes off Biana since they had woken, but Fitz had just assumed it was hoax to make Sophie jealous or to make Fitz feel less guilty of pairing with Sophie. Could Dex have really stopped liking Sophie within a day?
Dex pursed his lips irritably. "No. Keefe is just making up things. As usual."
"Of course I am. But they usually turn out to be true," Keefe answered, propping his feet nonchalantly on the glass table. "I guessed that Sophie and Fitz were a thing, didn't I?"
Dex sighed exasperatedly. "But they're so obvious. When have I ever shown interest in Biana?"
Fitz felt his cheeks heat. "We're not that obvious!"
"You're more obvious than Dex. And that's saying a lot." Keefe raised his eyebrows, obviously amused.
"Give me proof," Dex answered, crossing his arms stubbornly.
"Well, there is the fact that you stared at for the past two hours," Keefe replied nonchalantly, examining his nails with rapt interest.
Dex's face flushed crimson. "That's--" he swallowed, "stupid. I wasn't--"
Fitz grinned. "You were."
Dex's shoulders slumped. "Was it obvious?" he said after a moment.
"Blaringly," Keefe answered, arching his eyebrows.
"Are you planning on asking her?" For the first time, Tam spoke up, leaning forward so he could look Dex in the eye.
"I--maybe, I mean--" Dex's expression fell, hand slack at his side. "I don't know."
