A week later, Lexi was waiting in the studio for Road Trip to arrive for her first rehearsal with them. Naturally, they were already 30 minutes late. Knowing they may still be some time, she decided to continue working on her solo to their song 'I wasn't worried', which she was hoping to perform at another competition futher down the road.
She was so caught up in the dance, that she didn't notice when Ginge lead the boys in. But when she finished the routine, her breath coming in short uneven bursts, she saw them standing watching her. They all smiled, and the uncertainty that they would hate it was gone.
"So, shall we start by showing them the beginning of the routine, and then we can start work on the part with them in." Ginge said to Lexi who nodded. Ginge played the music, and Lexi let the music take her, re performing her competition solo, up to the final chorus. At this point, Ginge had choreographed a series of lifts for her to do with the boys to finish the routine off.
Once she'd finished, Ginge said that they'd start with Rye's part, as it would be hardest, and they got to work. All the others sat with their backs to the mirror, while Lexi took Rye to the middle of the floor. Ginge instructed them on how to safely do it, for Lexi was to go above Rye's head in the first lift and also acted as a spotter to protect Lexi in case of a fall.
The lift itself was fairly easy to Rye, but Lexi noticed that there was something missing, so she took him to sit with the other boys.
"This dance isn't about the moves," she said, "The thing that makes this stand out is the emotion, you have to feel the dance." She looked at the boys hoping they would understand.
"But what do we think of, how do we feel it?" Brooklyn asked, like she knew he would.
"I'll tell you what I think of, but you have to find something for yourself, something that gives the lyrics meaning." She replied.
"When I'm dancing to this song, I think of my Mum. She was always there for more, even when I didn't realise it.
A couple of years ago, I was in a relationship with someone, and it wasn't entirely healthy. I didn't think there was a way out, and for sometime I didn't realise I needed a way out. But my Mum was there for me. She realised that things were not right, and she tried to help me out, but I didn't realise it, so I pushed her away. Distancing myself from the one person who cared." Tears were looking in her eyes as she spoke, but she knew she had to finish.
"Then she was gone. She had a heart attack, and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her. Losing her then, when I'd pushed her so far away made me see I needed to get out. And her death, it saved me, it gave me the strength to break myself out. But that didn't stop the pain of my Mum leaving." She finished, then no longer able to hold back the tears, she ran from the room crying.
