"Do we have any more beer?" She asked tiredly, running a hand through her hair. Today had been a rough day for the two, filled with vivid flashbacks that broke her into tears. Fernando had spent the majority of the day convincing her that what she was seeing, feeling and hearing wasn't real. They were both exaughsted.
"That's probably not a good idea tonight." Fernando replied, patting the couch for her to sit. She gave up scouring the fridge for alcohol and collapsed next to him. Cool evening breeze from the kitchen window filtered through the room, bringing with it the sound of New York: honking horns and the blended voices of thousands of people roaming the streets. Fernando was engrossed in the television, soaking up a news story about a tornado in Kentucky, when a blonde woman came on the screen.
"Breaking news" she said in an urgent tone, pressing her earpiece into her ear to confirm her information. "It has just been confirmed that at around 9pm this evening" Both Fernando and Alex looked at the clock and noted it was 9:45 "a man jumped to his death off the Brooklyn Bridge here in New York City. Samuel Webster, 32, had no family..." The reporter's words faded into the background as a shrill scream escaped Alexandria's mouth. The picture of Samuel Webster appeared on the screen. She was staring into the eyes of the dead man on the television, the man who comitted suicide less than an hour ago. The dark, black, beady eyes. The eyes from That Night.
Fernando grasped her shoulders, shaking me pact to the real world.
"That man...that's him." She whispered. Fernando stared at her blankly for a second, before it clicked into place. His face moved around as he tried to figure out how he felt about this relevation.
"Are you sure that's the man?"
"Yes. Yes, that monster, he's dead." She waited while the reality of the situation sank into his mind, his features turning to relief as he realized what this meant.
"Well, that's good then. Does it make you feel better?" He breathed with an easy sigh. She nodded at him.
"Does this mean beer?" She asked with fake enthusiasm. He laughed.
"This means a good night's sleep." He replied. She stuck my tounge out and went to bed.
She woke the next morning from a restless, dreamless sleep, desperately craving to go outside. The cold was setting in as late October cast its shadows on New York City. Thick grey clouds blanketed the sky, and the air was electrified as a thunderstorm loomed overhead. It was the perfect day to go to the ocean. Alexandria loved when the salty wind whipped around, and choppy gray waves pounded the sand. The power of the ocean on a stormy day was exhilarating.
"Fernando" She whispered into his ear. He slept on his side of their shared bed, an arm over his eyes. "FernandoFernandoFERNANDO!" He groaned and rolled over, trying to ignore her pestering.
"Fernando, wake up! I have a great idea!" She said, practically flipping him off the bed with excited bouncing. He opened his eyes with a gruff sigh, glaring up at her in the dim room.
"Hey you!" She exclaimed, shaking him awake "let's go to the ocean! It's stormy out, it's the perfect day. We have to! Please?"
"Sure, let's go." He mumbled, stumbling out of bed. He rubbed his eyes and groggily reached for some clothes. Alex filled a thermos with hot cocoa and bundled up in skinny jeans, a maroon sweater and an chunky white beanie to hide her ears and hair. Fernando joined her, and they headed downstairs. It was her first time out since That Night, and the world had changed. The wind bit her ears and howled between the skyscrapers. People shoved and pushed and talked angrily into cell phones. Not a single person smiled. Tingling chill ran its fingers down her spine, and bitter fear struck her heart like lightning.
She looked up at Fernando as they waited to cross the street. She felt strength swell in her heart, looking at him so brave and steady. She took his hand, and the menacing world melted away. He looked down at her curiously. People swarmed around them as they looked at eachother, and the electricity between their eyes was like a magnet. Who wouldn't stare at the stunning brunette and the sexy Spaniard, gazing into each others eyes? Fernando smiled down at her huge, innocent eyes, and Alexandria smiled right back.
