The ride to...wherever...was nice. They talked and laughed the entire time. She was expecting a boring conversation about his family and life as a prince. Instead, they talked about anything but. They talked about school, friends, interests, everything. She learned that Fernando had a best friend named Miguel. He graduated from college at the University of Barcelona two years ago. Against his parents' will, he studied fine arts. As his "punishment", he was forced to marry. No offense, he had said. There was no denying he made her laugh, but she still felt no spark.
She told him all about her dreams because she trusted him. She told him how she wanted to get out. She wanted to explore the world. He complimented my "adventerous personality."
They drove west for two hours, until they reached the Strait of Dover. They parked on a cliff and walked to the edge. They sat down and let their feet hang off the edge. She looked down at the water below as it crashed on the white rocks below. It was a beautiful view as the salty air blew loose strands of her hair away. Fernando held something behind his back. She looked at him quizzically.
"I have two options for you, Princess." He paused and she nodded with encouragement. He took a deep breath. "Your car is waiting at a cafe nearby. You can either take this..." He pulled a plane ticket out from behind his back and handed it to her. It was a plane ticket for the VistaJet private airport. To America, to New York. "You could go there and start over. Or..." He pulled out a small navy box and lowered his voice. "Or you could stay here, and marry me." He opened the box to reveal a gorgeous engagement ring. It was had a silver band with a dark oval Sapphire set between four sparkly diamonds. Her mouth fell open with shock. It was absolutely beautiful. He smiled slightly.
"I know you don't know me, and I know you don't love me. But I can make you happy, Alexandria." Her name snapped her out of the daze. She didn't know him, and she didn't love him. And how could she possibly marry someone like that? She sighed.
"Fernando, I'm so sorry. I can't marry you." She clutched the ticket. "I need to get out of all this. I can't be chained down anymore." He nodded and gave her a reassuring smile.
"I completely understand." He told her, but her heart broke for him a bit. "Go to the airport, Alex. Get out of here while you can. Go and start something new." He was just so kind and selfless. She wrapped her arms around his neck and gave him a hug. He wrapped his arms around her waist.
"I'm so sorry." she whispered.
"You're fine, Alex. Good luck, alright?" He pulled away and held her at an arms length. "This life isn't made for you. Escape while you can." She smiled and kissed his cheek gently.
"Thank you."
