"Mom! I'm missing a box!" You called from your new room, far away from your home country.
"I'll be right there sweetie, I just need to carry one more box in here." Your mother said, hearing a thump of boxes being placed in the empty living room.
You look out your window, seeing the new scenery of Japan. It was much more different from America, where you were born and raised for the first 16 years of your life.
Looking around, you felt so different in a completely different culture. But your mother's family was Japanese, your father's American.
Knowing the basics was easy, but you were still very nervous.
"(Y/n), what box are you missing?" Your mother stood in the doorway, smiling at you.
"It was some of my books and photo albums in it. And some of my volleyball items." Your mother nodded, going back downstairs to look for the box.
It was going to be a long day, unpacking and getting settled in Japan. But, at least you had Karasuno Highschool to look forward to.
•
"I'm off, I'll see you mom!" Picking up your duffle bag and satchel.
"Have a good day, (y/n)!" Your mother waved as she was preparing a meal for your 3 year old brother, Kento.
You ran out of the door, wanting to get to school earlier to see your members of the girl's volleyball club.
As you walk down one of the side streets, you notice a group boys running. Their jackets say Karasuno, so you run up to them.
"I was wondering...if you could show me to the girl's volleyball club?" You asked politely, looking at the silver haired boy and a ginger haired...elementary schooler?
"Sure we can! My name is Koushi Sugawara, and this person next to me is-" But it seems he was interrupted.
"My name is Hinata Shouyou! It's nice to meet you, I'm a first year! " The ginger greeted you happily.
"I-I'm (f/n) (l/n). It's nice to meet you two." You smiled at the two boys, picking up your duffle bag.
"Karasuno Boy's Volleyball Club?" You asked, pointing to their shirts.
Suga nodded at you, smiling. "I'm a third year, setter. You?" Hinata looked at you.
"I-I was a setter in America, but I really couldn't master one position." You laughed and pointed towards the road, not wanting to continue the conversation.
"We should probably get going, yah?" Both the boys started to run, you following them.
•
You stood panting, catching your breath. The two boys were wiping their sweat.
"Thank you two again, Suga-kun and Hinata-kun. I'll see you around." You waved to them and entered the girl's volleyball club room.
The few girls in that room looked at you.
"U-Um hello, I'm (f/n) (l/n). It's It's a pleasure to meet you!" Then the school bell rang, the girls picking up their things and offering to walk with you to the school.
When you walked into your homeroom, you noticed...was it Hinata Shouyou? He noticed you and waved. You took your seat a few seats away from his, looking at the other students.
"This was going to be a long day..." You sighed.
•
At lunchtime, you took a seat outside by some shady trees. Although you knew Japanese well, it still challenged you. So some classes were harder, but English was easy.
"(Y/n)! How was your classes so far?" Hinata approached you, sitting down beside you.
"Fine...I guess. Japanese is still challenging. I lived in America my whole life." Hinata looked at you in shock.
"Geez (y/n), that must be tough. But I'm sure it'll get better. You've got volleyball! There's no barriers there, your teammates will be your family." The ginger said proudly, making you smile.
"That's true Hinata-kun, they're really nice. It's too bad we don't have practice tonight." You sighed and looked up through the leaves of the tree you were sitting under.
"Come practice with the boys. You know, in junior high I practiced with the girls most of the time after I lost my first match." Hinata rested back against the trunk, looking at you.
"I'll take up that offer. But, don't be too surprised." You smiled and stood up, stretching.
•
School ended quickly, which reminded you of the practice with the boys. So you quickly changed, running to the gymnasium.
"Ah! (Y/n)!" Hinata waved you down, you smiled and walked up to him.
He opened the door wider and you walked in, setting down your bags.
"Wow...such a huge gym. Who knew it would be this size." You said to yourself.
"Let me put on my volleyball shoes, just a moment." You said and slipped them on fairly quickly, tying them.
You noticed some of the other boys staring at you. So you stood up, smiling and them.
Hinata coughed and showed you over to them. "Everyone, we have someone that will be practicing with us tonight."
"Hello! I'm (f/n) (l/n), it's a pleasure to be practicing with you!" You smiled and started to stretch.
After stretching with the boys, you got to know some of them fairly well.
You breathed in and grabbed a ball, stepping back to practice your serves.
"Sorry if my serves aren't the best, it's been about a week since I've practiced." You smiled and threw the ball up, focusing.
You pushed off, reaching your right hand up and hit the ball, opening your eyes to see it glide over the net.
"I've been playing since Junior High, so I've got enough experience." You smiled at the boys, Hinata clapping.
"Nice serve, (y/n)! It wasn't bad at all!" Hinata smiled, picking up the ball.
"But I was wondering if you'd toss for me, you said you were setting in America." You first nodded for a few seconds, then stopped.
"Wait...what Hinata-kun? You can't possibly spike, right? You're short...how can you?" You looked him straight in the eyes.
The gymnasium became quiet.
"You're short. Height matters in volleyball."
But the look he gave you was astonishing.
"Toss for me (y/n). I'll show you that height doesn't matter in volleyball."
You stood still, feeling the movement as your hands stretched out, your fingers touching the ball and tossing it high.
"Oh shoot...that was too high!" You shouted but in a flash, Hinata was high in the air, spiking it over the net in seconds.
The ball landed towards the end of the court, your eyes watching it bounce and roll to a stop.
You turned back to Hinata, seeing his bright eyes alive. The sweat coming down his temple.
"Volleyball isn't about height." The ginger smiled at you and the boys cheered.
