Later that night, the four of us sat in mine and Jonah's room. Mitch and Jonah sat on his bed. Me and Evelyn on mine. Evelyn sat with her legs crossed, notebook in hand, fiddling with a pen. We had driven to the nearest off license and bought some drinks and cigarettes. Jonah and myself bought multiple cans of Mountain Dew. Whilst Mitch and Evelyn opted for a selection box of WKD. Being the responsible person out of us all, I walked over to the bathroom and brought out a small towel, I rolled it up and pushed it against the bottom of the door, therefore allowing us to smoke without anyone smelling it. Currently we were trying to conjure up a plan to sabotage the Monday Maths club.
"So me and Charlie drive outta campus and distract Puma Steve until one of you two call us and tell us your done?" Jonah questioned.
"Four." She corrected. "I'm bringing along Liam, he's taking engineering and he can help us mess up the engine."
"And the other one?" I asked.
"Oh yeah also Chloe from my Fine Arts class offered to help, she's gonna deal with painting of the vehicle."
After an hour of discussion, many plans and Evelyn's endless notes we came up with a plan. Jonah and I were assigned to distract Steve and guide him away from the scene. Evelyn was in charge of puncturing the wheels, Mitch pulling the springs out of the seats. Liam was going to deal with the Engine and Chloe was to paint the car with white high shining gloss.
Our plan B was pretty basic. If any of the Monday Maths club saw us or tried to intervene they would run, and call me and Jonah back. Jonah and I had no plan B. If Puma Steve caught us we were done for.
"Guys I have to go, I have a date at 7.30." Mitch exclaimed to the group.
"Shame." Jonah stated "I was just beginning to warm to you."
We all laughed and Mitch took the last drop out of his glass before heading out.
"I better be off too." Jonah continued.
Both Evelyn and I have him a strange look. "But this is your dorm dimwit." She said.
He scowled at her petit frame spread all over the bed, leaving me squashed on the pillow. "Yeah I know, but I do have a social life!"
"What social life?" She asked. "You wish you had a social life."
"Oh don't sass me girl, I will sass you right back." He replied waving his index finger in the air.
She rolled her eyes as he left the room. She walked to my record player that I had previously showed Jonah. She flicked through my collection and exclaimed with delight when she found my David Bowie album. She droned on about how she'd grown to love him after watching The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, and how much his view on particular things interested her. She continued to talk for a while, but I didn't catch a lot of what she was saying because I was too busy admiring the dainty figure before me. "Come on Charles, I wanna show you something." She stood up and walked to the window, opening it and climbing out. My heart stopped for a second before I realised we were on the first floor.
"I would really prefer it if you didn't call me that." I shouted out of the window before climbing out and landing on the grass with a thud.
She was sat with her back pressed against the stone wall hugging her thin legs with her chin resting on her knees. She looked up at the stars. "Look." She gestured towards the dark sky. "The stars are always prettier this time of year."
I followed her gaze and found myself in awe. "Your right. It's beautiful." I said.
"I'm always right."
We sat in silence, watching the sky, various clouds scattering above hiding the specks of sparkling white.
"Evelyn?"
"Yeah?" She replied, the moon reflecting the green in her beautiful eyes.
"Do you believe in destiny?" I asked.
She paused for no more than a moment before carefully answering. "Life is about choices, not chances. If destiny were real, what would be the point of life?" She said, whilst taking a drag from her newly lit cigarette. "Life is about making mistakes, making your own choices, and not relying on destiny to pull you through."
We returned back to our previous positions. My legs spread out in the floor and my hands buried in the pockets of my hoodie. The grass outside of mine and Jonah's dorm had a small flat patch that extended further down a hill. At the bottom of the hill there was small lake, and from where we were seated we could here the running water, and owls sounding their call.
"It's all my fault isn't it?" She spoke. "My mothers death. Was my doing."
I looked at her with dismay. "No, don't say that, you had nothing to do with it. Don't blame yourself."
"It was. She's dead because of me!!" She cried, her voice becoming louder.
"Why on earth would it be your fault?" I asked calmly.
She looked at me, tears threatening to spill from her now darker jade eyes. "It had been a good day. My father had taken me and my mother swimming. They were very pleased with me when I attempted the big slide." She smiled at the memory, and then her face returned back to stone. "Then my father went to work at night, but it wasn't too late. My mother cooked me some tea, but there wasn't anything that I liked, and my mother, always trying to make me her happy princess went to get me some stupid little fish freakin' fingers!!" she shouted again.
"Yeah?" I asked, pushing her to continue.
She looked at me, tears outlining the rims of her eyes. "And that was it. She pulled of the drive. I was only 7, but it was okay because she told me she would only be gone for 10 minutes." She looked down at the lake once again. "An hour later, my father returned home early and took me to the hospital. I still remember the room Charlie. Sitting in the chair and watching her lifeless body, 'it's all my fault' is all that ran through my head. It still does. The bleeps of the heart monitor still haunt me, and then the long one, oh my god the long one." She let the tears fall and her voice started cracking. "How is a 7 year old meant to deal with that? And then my father decides to join the army and ship me off to my grandmothers." She was now full on crying, and all I could do was hug her from the side whilst she laid her head on my shoulder in an effort to comfort her.
