On my birthday in the third grade, my parents picked me up from school and told me that to celebrate, we were going to get ice cream. Me, being 9-years-old, was super excited. When we got to the small ice cream shop, I was practically jumping up and down in line. When we finally got to the front I stared confidently at the ice cream man and said, "I'd like a lot of birthday cake ice cream in a cone. Make sure it's a lot."
He just smiled at me and gave me just what I asked for- a LOT of ice cream in a cone. While we were driving home, my parents were watching me through the mirror and smiling because I looked so happy about the ice cream. My mom decided that I should open my birthday gift in the car so she reached to grab it out of the glove box and took her eyes off the road for a split second. When she looked up, there was a person in the middle of the bridge, not paying attention. She tried to swerve out of the way but ended up crashing trough the railing and we plummeted off the bridge. I remember the terror on my parents faces. I wish that wasn't the last face I would ever see from them again but alas, it was. My memory is a little fuzzy after that but I remember waking up in the hospital with my best friend Serena by my side. Her face lit up once I opened my eyes and she gave me a huge hug. It took a few seconds for me to recollect what happened previously. "Serena, what happened? Where are my parents?" She let me out of her embrace and looked at me with a sad face.
"Isla, you and your parents were in a car crash.. They didn't make it but you miraculously did... I am so sorry." All I could do was stare at her for a few seconds and then the tears started cascading down my face.
"What will happen to me? My parents don't have any siblings and all of my grandparents are gone." I asked almost uncomprehendingly.
"It going to be alright." Serena replied with a soft voice and sad eyes, "My parents said that they would take care of you." All I did was hug her and cry. She let me sob into her shoulder for hours. Since that day nine years ago, Serena's parents have been my legal guardians. They treat me just like a daughter of their own and I'm really lucky that they are the ones taking care of me. I've been living a fairly normal life with them for nine years now.
