I rubbed Dom’s cold hand and just silently prayed to God that he’d wake him up. The doctors performed the surgery to remove the bullet and by the grace of God, it hadn’t gotten through the skull.

My Dom was a fighter.

The door slowly opened and I smiled weakly at TJ who looked just as torn up about this as me. “Hey, hun.” TJ had quickly become like an older brother to me and he was my support system along with Valerie. Val was helping me out a lot more with Orlando and Fey was nowhere to be found.

That hurt a little, but I had more important things to think about. “Hey, Teej. Anything new?” He nodded and I saw the light in his eyes brighten.

“We were able to locate Mauricio, but as of right now, we’re letting him think he got away with it. He messed up by showing up to the hospital once when you were away, but that was all I needed.” Soon after surgery, TJ hacked the cameras of the county building and learned the shooter was Mauricio. Luckily, the cameras had audio, so we also learned that Mauricio was gay and in love with Dom.

It was a little weird, but my disgust for his actions overweighed my shock at his sexual orientation. “Get him good.” TJ nodded.

“We sent our most ruthless man after him.” I felt a little weird about the business that TJ and Dom ran as I learned more about it, but I was beginning to get used to the idea. They employed ruthless men, some even former CIA, to be bodyguards to whoever they employed. I also learned that everyone employed wasn’t an illegal business man, which made me feel a little better.

“Good.” We sat in silence until the door opened again and the superintendent walked in. I felt anger build up inside me as I watched her pompously walk in the room. She could at least have some remorse for having such a screwed up son.

“Can I speak to Charlotte alone?” TJ looked tense, but I nodded to tell him that it was okay and he kissed my forehead and walked out. “Wow, both men? I applaud you.”

I snapped my head to the ridiculous woman and if looks could kill she’d be dead. “I’d watch your mouth, considering you have a son and reputation to be protecting.” She rolled her eyes and scoffed.

“You have nothing on me.” I raised my eyebrow and leaned back in my chair, rubbing my ever growing belly.

“Really? Let’s start with your previous relations with a drug dealer that resulted in the birth of your son. A son who I might say is addicted to drugs that your ex happens to supply. I could also mention your denial of your son’s bipolar disorder.”

Her face started to pale significantly and I rolled my eyes at the naivety of this woman. Did she expect me to stay weak and tearful this whole time?

I was out for blood.

“Here’s the kicker. How about finding out that the said ex is in love with one of your male employees and shot him in the head. How does that sound for election time?” By now, I was glaring at the superintendent and her watery eyes did nothing for me.

“I didn’t know he could do something like this.” I rolled my eyes and started to take deep breaths. The doctor allowed me to stay with Dom as long as I stayed calm and healthy. He checked my vitals every couple of hours just to make sure.

“Oh shut up. You, Mauricio, and Maylin are all at the mercy of me and TJ right now. I can go ahead and tell you that neither of us are in very forgiving moods right now.”

“Well how about I go to the board about your relationship with Dominic?” She looked smug and I laughed.

“What relationship? Oh, you mean how he’s been such a great support system for me as I deal with this pregnancy that I’m having with his best friend?” We’ve had this story mapped out for months and now I’m going to have to thank TJ for agreeing with this plan.

“Nobody will believe that!”

“But who’s going to believe the woman with a drug dealer ex and drug addicted son?” She quieted then and I turned back to Dom, completely done with the insufferable woman.

“You can let yourself out.” I heard the clicking of her heels and I was able to let out a deep breath that I didn’t even realize I was holding.

“Well she looked pretty mad.” I spun quickly at the unknown voice and I felt like I would’ve paled had I been of lighter color.

In front of me stood Dom’s mother.

“I’m sorry to meet in such a dire situation, but I’m Ferra, Dom’s mother.” I held my hand out and she shook it.

“I’m Charlotte, Dom’s girlfriend.”

“Should be fiancée.” She looked down at my bulging stomach and I felt naked in the hospital gown. “Don’t take it the wrong way, sweetie, but with the way my boy talks about you, you should’ve been married already.”

I laughed uncomfortably. “Yeah, I hope he waits until I-” I was going to say finish high school, but I’m not sure how much Dom told his mom.

“I know you’re a student of his. My boy can’t lie to me to save his life.” I chuckled and looked back longingly at Dom. I wish he could wake up and share this moment with me and his mother.

“Don’t worry, he’ll wake soon.” I smiled at his mother and thanked God for the extra addition to my support system.
