chapter five
3:00am
it didn't take long for caleb to find the urge to start driving again.
him and gaten made a deal to swap drivers after lunch, since caleb was becoming so sleep deprived.
"caleb you sure you're okay to drive?" finn whisper yelled from the boot, startling caleb since he didn't think anyone would be awake at this time
"yeah im fine" caleb smiled before pulling back out into the road again.
millie started to shuffle around from how carelessly caleb was driving at first
"caleb slow down a bit, you're waking millie" finn whispered, loudly from the back
caleb laughed, nodding his head back to finn. "okay romeo" caleb replied
"what's that supposed to mean?" finn shot back, almost too defensively
"you figure it out" caleb laughed again before focusing his full attention on the road, ignoring finn in denial behind him
finn sighed, realising he was now being ignored. he was too tired to continue anyways, considering he didn't sleep at all last night.
he looked down at millie taking the time to look at all of her features
the lights from the street poles were shining through the windows as they drove past, making it light enough for finn to see her
i guess he didn't realise how much he got lost in her eyes to realise she was now awake, staring right back at him
"take a picture it'll last longer" she laughed sitting up, finn on the other hand biting his lip in embarrassment
"sorry" he said laughing, trying to make it less awkward for himself.
"it's fine" she laughed back looking at him, eyeing the very big bags visible under his eyes. "did you sleep at all?" she asked with a worried tone
"yeah" finn said with a reassuring smile. millie shook her head, it was obvious he was lying
"finn" she said, placing her hand over his. a shock went through finns arm, almost as if it was about to become numb
"did you get any sleep?" she said this time, more serious. finn sighed looking down at her hand that was still on top of his
"no" he blankly replied. this time, millie sighed. "was it because I was laying on you" millie asked pulling her hand off of his now, feeling bad
"no" finn said shaking his head grabbing her hand again. it was, and both finn and millie knew that. "finn, don't lie" millie sighed again
it went silent for a moment. "fine it was but if not you wouldn't of been able to get to sleep which would've been wor-" finn rambled on
millie cut him off. "you should've just told me"
"as if i was going to wake you up to tell you i couldn't sleep" finn said back rolling his eyes, something he hadn't done in almost a while towards her.
which was weird for the both of them, very, very weird.
millie laughed shaking her head. "look im sure the seats big enough for the both of us to lay on"
finn looked down at the ground, than at her hand that he still hadn't let go of.
it was big enough for the both of them, more than big enough to be exact. but finn didn't know, would that be pushing it.
it to be in fact, his feelings
"i guess" finn said letting go to grab another pillow to put at the very end of the seat, for them to both lay their heads on
millie layed closest to the seat, it made her feel safer. whilst finn layed on the other side, trying to keep distance
millie faced the seat, finn facing the other side not wanting any awkward contact at the time.
eventually of course there backs got sore from staying one side, and almost as if pushed by fate, they both turned around at the same time now faces only inches apart
they still stayed silent, eye contact not breaking once. "smooth" millie laughed off the awkward situation.
finns face still froze, but he managed to escape a small chuckle.
millie put her head back into where it wouldve before she turned around. just under finns chin, since she was shorter than him.
finn placed his head just above hers, wrapping his arms around her waist unsure of where else to put them.
millie waited a minute before speaking, enjoying finns company more than she felt she should've.
"finn this feels weird" she whispered into his chest, not wanting him to pull away
"why" he whispered back, not wanting to pull away either.
"i thought we you know- hated each other" she replied, not knowing if she said the right thing or not
"we can't anymore, for sadie and caleb remember?" finn replied
millie felt her heart drop, was this why he is being so nice to her? because sadie and caleb told him to?
"right" she said so quietly, she wasn't even sure finn would've heard her
"this doesn't have to be anything more two friends making the best out of a bad situation" finn said wrapping his arms around her tighter.
although them both knowing they want it to be more than 'just friends'
millie smiled at his actions, but dropped at his words. "yeah" she said taking a small breathe.
"just friends"
