Karen's POV
White walls surround me. I'm in the same situation I was in before. I lean up, glancing at the window barring me from the free world, reminding myself that the blue-sheeted bed hugs the wall to my right. Without even having to eye that area, I know I'm right. All of the cells are designed the same way.
Still, it would be quite ironic if I would be in the same cell I was assigned to last time, wouldn't it? I stand up. My joints feel like unoiled metal, yet still carry me to the mattress. I plop onto the soft square, though it isn't very different from my own back in my factionless apartment, so my back is able to touch the even chillier floor.
I stare up at the white ceiling. A small vent is the only thing that interrupts its smooth texture, and even that seems to be made of the same snowy material. Silence surrounds me just like the walls. Something uncanny as being on the streets you heard everything. It's almost serene, calming in fact. I can see how Jeanine must have bribed the factionless into being subjects, back when it wasn't as inconvenient. Back when we were together.
There's a familiar tap emitting from outside my cell door. Clap! Clap! Clap! Clap! The knocks are rapid, flaunting their integrity and desperation. The footsteps grow louder and louder. They don't seem to fade away, and it's only after the door initially cracks open, that I realize the tapping has finally paused. Behind the silvery plank, a slit of royal blue peeks into my room. Jeanine.
She slides into the area, never even glancing at me! Instead, Jeanine's face is highlighted by the glow emitting from her thin tablet. She types at a few things, before finally staring at her lost love, yet never realizing it. "Are you finally stable?" She draws out, squinting at me like a predator. She just might be one. Jeanine purses her lips. "Come."
Jeanine's POV
The girl looks like the rags she wears. Her eyes are sunken, a deep blanket of gray hanging from each. Dirty blonde, greasy hair twists into her face and she reeks of sweat and waste. Yet a test subject is a test subject, and other than the boy, who's unconscious, she's the only one left. A deep sigh escapes my parted lips once I turn from the freakish woman in front of me. She needs to get cleaned up, but first things first.

"If you dare make any move against me, there are guards at every corner," I warn as we pass the protective shadows on our way to a laboratory. Normally, I would take precautions and have a guard, but I don't want her anywhere near a weapon if she managed to take down two Dauntless, singlehandedly. Rather, it is far more beneficial to have guards placed in certain areas, despite the fact it requires more soldiers in the first place.
We reach the entrance to the simulation room. I still need to test her for divergence though I'm certain she will have an aptitude for it.
"Sit," I order, referencing the chair plotted in the center of the room. She stumbles over to it, finally proving compliance. Then again, I doubt she could fight the five guards, positioned around the lab. A smirk stretches my mouth. I finally have control over something in my life, even if it means I have to control another's. In a way, perhaps it is a feeling which replaces Karen. I huff air out as my satisfaction fades away. Sorrow buries itself in me. I miss her so much, and I tell myself that every day.
Taking a seat beside my new victim, I strap her to the seat and prepare the syringe.
"Jeanine!" She calls out. Her rasping voice can only muster a whisper. Many have called my name before our sessions, hoping to ensue some morsel of compassion in me. They all fail. Why should this case be different? "Please, it's me," the factionless woman calls out. She sounds slightly stronger now, but her words still crackle like static. I pause, and stare into her eyes. Could it be?
