The first thing I heard when I woke up was Aunt Ellen telling Maya I was still asleep and not to disturb me. “Maya its ok, I’m awake.” I half shouted through the door as I got up put my dressing gown on and unlocked the door.  I ushered her in and relocked the door.

“Nadi, why are you locking the door?” Maya asked looking confused.

“ I don’t want aunt Ellen coming in. I need to talk to you.” I leaned against the back of the door. “My dad’s alive.” She looked gobsmacked

“WHAT?! When did you find out? and why not sooner?” she quizzed me.

“ last night and I don’t know. I don’t know if I wanna know, would you want to know? If you thought someone was dead for years then find out their still alive, would you want to meet them?” I shrugged, I didn’t know what to do, hopefully Maya did.

“ Errrrmmm… Yes! If I found out my dad was still alive I would jump at the chance of meeting him, what else did your aunt say?”

“she said that they had been ‘protecting’ me, not like it helped much, I still got kidnapped..” I felt so stressed, I needed some air. “ Maya I need to get out of this house, can we go for a walk or something?” I stood, walked to the open window and looked out over the garden, Aunt Ellen was working on the flowerbeds at the back, I called out to her “ Aunt we’re going out, I’ve got my phone, I’ll call you if I need you.” I shut the window without waiting for an answer, grabbed my jacket and went towards the door, Motioning Maya to come with me.

We reached the front door without Aunt Ellen coming in, as I opened the door though she was stood on the other side, she looked grumpy. “Do you really think it’s a good idea to go out, when just yesterday someone kidnapped you?!” I didn’t want to answer her, so I didn’t. I pushed past her and strolled down the road, Maya followed a few steps behind, I slowed down and she caught up.

“Maybe your aunt was trying to protect you, maybe it’s because of your dad that you got kidnapped, that’s why she told you now.” I just looked at her, did she think I hadn’t already thought of this, but if it was true what was ‘Daddy’ involved in. “Sorry Nadi, it’s just maybe it was the only way to keep you safe, i-“ I stopped her with a glance. “ well sorry” ugh now I felt bad.

“ I’m sorry Maya, im just stressed and don’t wanna talk about this anymore, let’s talk about something else.” I peered at her through  my hair and slid a slight smile her way, she smiled back and I knew we would be ok, no matter what.

Her grin widened, “ I know what we can chat about… Jace” she had that wicked look in her eye, like a Cheshire cat. I blushed.

“he’s been trying to find you. You should let him know you’re ok, I bet he’s reeal worried. He likes you a lot, Shame you got to him before I did.” We both laughed at that, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and scrolled to his name. “ do I text or call him?” I asked aloud

“ you call him.” Maya answered. I Pressed the call button, all of a sudden felt really nervous and shy.

Hello and welcome to the T-Mobile voicemail messaging service, the number you a calling is unavailable to take.. I hung up, “Voicemail, I’ll try later.” We continued walking down the street, I couldn’t help looking behind us as we walked. I didn’t see anyone but the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, like I was being watched or something.

“Maya, I feel strange again, we need to get somewhere where there are lots of people. We made our way down the street and into a coffee shop, it was packed, there was one table left, right near the window, My perfect spot.

“Nadi, I’ll go order us some drinks, what do you want?” she asked whilst I looked round at the other customers. “ a hot chocolate please Maya.”  I answered her.

I didn’t see anyone I recognised, but that didn’t matter, no one would touch us with other people about. That night, there wasn’t anyone around. When Maya came back she bumped the table with her hip, “ Nadi, focus, grab your drink please.” She passed my drink and dropped herself in the seat across from me.

“I nearly got sent to grammars.” Maya looked upset, I lowered my cup to the table and looked at her, she looked worried and about to cry, “ Mum said that if I wanted to stay I would have to make sure I stay out of trouble and be in on time every night, one more late night and im out., I don’t want to leave..” Oh no.

“Maya it’s not going to happen, you’re not going anywhere, if you do it’s to my house. I won’t let you leave me, you can come and stay with me, Aunt Ellen won’t care, and if she does I don’t.” I saw the tears in her eyes, and leaned across the table to hold her hands. “Maya Listen, you’re not going anywhere, Don’t panic. You wanna stay at mine tonight?” she nodded, i finished my drink and stood. “I think we both need a drink, Coming?!” I started to walk away when I heard my name. I turned around but no one was paying any attention, it seemed like no one else had heard it. “Maya, did you hear someone call my name?” as she stood she shook her head.

“no I didn’t hear anything, why, did you?” i didn’t want to worry her so I said no, must have heard someone else say something and thought it was my name, now im hearing things. Great!

We left the coffee shop and headed towards town. We needed to find an off licence and get some drink in for the night. As we walked I kept glancing around, sure that someone was watching us, just couldn’t pinpoint where from. I walked faster and faster until Maya was jogging to keep up with me. “Nadi, Slow Down!! You’re going too fast. Why are you nearly running? Is something wrong?” I just shook my head and slowed down, I didn’t realise I was going so fast, got to walk slower don’t wanna freak her out.

♪Im’a Barbie girl, ina Barbie world.. its fantasti-♪ I pulled my phone out of my pocket and looked at the screen. “It’s Jace!” I glanced at Maya and she nodded.

“Hello, Ohh hi jace, I’m ok thank you. Errm, Yeaah how about tonight? Do you wanna come over?, Maya will be there too.” I waited for him to answer “ Sure, Great, See you then, Buhhbye” I hung up after he said goodbye. WOW.

“Sooooo.. He’s going to be at yours later then Yeaah?!” Maya asked as soon as I hung up. As I nodded she grinned. We continued down the street towards town.

“Maya, c’mon we neeeeed to find me an outfit...” we were back at mine, Maya lounging across the bed, me rummaging through my wardrobe.  “Nadi, we have 3 hours until he’s meant to be here. Ages!”  I gave her the puppy dog eyes I’d perfected years ago, “Pwweeaaaassseee!” I begged

“Ugh, Ok. Do you wanna go for sexy, cute, girl next door, or just plain slaggy?” I laughed at her. “I think I’ll go for the cute look. I reckon that would work well for me.”

I went to the loo whilst Maya raided my wardrobe trying to find something that would work. “Naddiii... get in here, I think I found something perfect.” I heard her shout, I ran towards my room, slid along the floor and flew through the doorway and onto the bed, Maya cracked up laughing and wouldn’t stop until I hit her arm with the shoe I was carrying. “Oww… and I’m helping you... I think I should put this outfit back and make you choose one yourself.” With that she stuck out her tongue and went to put the clothes back in the wardrobe. I grabbed them from her.

“Maya. You know I love you girl, please help make me look Fabulous. I need this.”

Two and a half hours later and we were pretty much ready,

“Aunt Ellen, are you going out tonight?” I hoped the answer was yes, I didn’t really want to discuss anything with jace and Maya if she was guna be listening in.

“Yes Nadi, I’m going out for a few hours, but I will be back quite early, I don’t want a house full of people, not like last time.” Yeeesss!! My lucks looking up. I did the happy dance back to Maya.

DINGDONG!    DINGDONG!

“Bye Nadi, Bye Maya. Back soon!” I heard Aunt Ellen shout, I replied with a short Bye. I listened for Maya’s reply but didn’t hear it, Maya?

“Maya, where are you?” I asked to the empty hall

“Nnrrrrggghhh” Maya stumbled round the corner from the kitchen with her jumper round her face. “Nnnrrrrrrrgggghhhhh” I ran to her and helped her pull it down, what the hell had she been doing? I couldn’t help but laugh, “Maya what were you doing?”

At that moment the doorbell rang again. DINGDONG.
