I opened the door and saw Jace. “Hey, you wanna come in?” when he smiled and nodded I moved back out of the way and let him past. “Welcome to the mad house, haha” I shut the door and guided him into the lounge, Maya was already spread across one couch, me and Jace sat next to each other on the other.
“So, what happened to you?!” he asked me. I told him the basics of what happened.
“I was knocked out, and woke up tied to a chair in a room, I was taken into another room, and some man was there and he shouted at me, they left me alone, untied, so I made an escape, ran to the village and called Aunt Ellen.” It sounded so much less dramatic than at the time but they still looked shocked. “You ran??” trust Maya to find that the most shocking part. We all laughed.
I felt Jace tense up beside me. “What’s wrong?” I asked,
“I smell smoke. Let me go check it out,” He left the room, I could hear his footsteps going down the hall. “Maya, what d’you think of him then?” i asked as soon as he was out of earshot. “Well…… He’s perfect for you.” I couldn’t help but give a little girly giggle. I threw a cushion towards Maya, she couldn’t react quick enough and it smacked her on the side of the face. “Uuughh, you meanie!” she grabbed two cushions, jumped up from the couch and started pummelling me with them. Laughing I grabbed one from her hand and started a full on attack. I don’t think we’d ever laughed so much in my life. I heard running and stopped in mid swing. Jace burst into the room with his phone in his hand “Nadi, Maya we need to get out of the house now! it’s on fire.” I threw a panicked look towards Maya and moved into the hall, I saw the smoke billowing out from under the kitchen door. “CRAP! Aunt Ellen’s guna kill me!” I hurtled towards the kitchen door trying to see how much the fire had spread but I couldn’t see anything through the smoke, the smoke was too thick, I couldn’t breathe. “Nadi, Get back here, you need to get out, the fire brigade is on its way here. Should be here soon.” I saw Maya already on her way out the front door. Jace stood waiting for me in the lounge doorway. “I can’t just let the house burn down” I choked out “I need to see if I can put any of it out. Please help me.” I reached the kitchen door and the heat was immense. I tried to grab the door handle but the heat was too hot, it felt like my skin was going to melt. I could feel the air around me being heated to almost boiling point. I heard glass popping, and the crackle of flames. My first fire and it was burning down my only home.
“Nadi, Jace get out of there. C’mon!” the heat increased and I had to move backwards, towards the front door, i saw the wooden door start to turn black, “Nadi, we have to get out, when the door goes the flames are guna roar up. We need to be out by then.” We were both coughing and choking on the smoke, I let him pull me backwards out the door, as we reached the bottom step I heard a bang and more smoke piled out the door, I looked in and saw the kitchen door hanging on its hinges and flames surging out towards the fresh air, it looked as though they were rushing to take over the house. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, I glanced around me, looking at the upstairs windows, I thought I saw someone in the attic window, No! No one was in the house, Aunt Ellen was out, and we were the only ones inside. I heard sirens in the distance, they weren’t close enough. I felt my eyes well up and couldn’t stop the tears from silently slipping down my face. I stood, watching my home burn, Maya came up behind me and pulled me into a big hug, I put my head on her shoulder and cried.
The sirens were closer than before, I watched the fire engine pull into the road and race towards us. Seven fire fighters jumped out, one came over to us and asked if there was anyone still inside. “No there’s no one in there, we were the only ones home.” he ran back to the others and told them what we’d said. I heard more sirens and watched as an ambulance pulled up; the paramedics rushed over to us and asked me and jace to follow them to the ambulance. Apparently they had to check our breathing to make sure that the smoke hadn’t damaged our lungs. I coughed and it felt as if my lungs would fly out of my mouth. The paramedics put an oxygen mask over my face and told me to breathe deeply. I tried to comply but with each breath I choked.
