"the hell you want?" i asked adrian. the rain dropped on my head, making my hair fall in front of my face. i didn't even know if he was there anymore.

"to take you home. look, that ms. cough drop lady called us earlier, so i'm here to take you home. when she called mom, mom started crying, and she sent me to get you."

"if mom wants me home, she can get me herself. i'm done with her sending other people to do her shit." i slicked my hair back, getting a full view of adrian. he was sopping as well, and he wasn't wearing much, considering it was 13 degrees celsius out.

"daniel james howell, i'm done with your shit." my mouth gaped open as he said my full name. "get your ass off the steps and go home! for god's sake! you act like you're so helpless all the time, but you wanna know who's helpless? hmm? me. do you know what it's like to grow up without an older brother who exists, but isn't there for you? an older brother that doesn't care about whether or not you got bullied, teased, or even killed! god damnit, dan! grow up!

" and have you not noticed phil constantly trying to get a hold of you because he wants to talk to you? he wants to care about you? he needs you? no! of course not! you're so self-absorbed that you don't have any empathy or notice anything that's happening around you!" adrian yelled. i've never heard him get this mad or cuss. ever.

"i-i'm sorry," i stuttered and stood up, trying to hug him.

"save your sorries." he turned away and started to walk away, waving me off. "if you wanted to be sorry, you'd be there for me." before i knew it, he was gone.

i sat back on the steps and started crying. i started processing everything that adrian had said and realized he was right.

phil needed me.

and i needed phil.
