I wake up another morning next to Chloe. It's nice, having someone sleep so close to me, her forehead leaning against my back. This time, she's not drunk. Maybe she feels comforted by me, but whatever the reason, I'm not complaining by any means. I roll over to face her as she rolls slightly onto her back, stretching her arms above her head. "Good morning," I say to her as she blinks her eyes awake. "Hi, Beca." She says through a tired yawn. "I was thinking I could make us some pancakes if you want? Or I can make waffles or if you want cereal thats cool too." She rolls over and scrolls through the notifications on her phone. "I...I can't stay I gotta get home. Jake is so pissed at me." She quickly stands up letting the covers glide down her bare legs. "No, what? You're not going there." "I have to... he's gonna kill me." She runs a hand through her hair in distress. "Chloe," I say standing up as she gathers her things. "Becs I need to go. Please. He's not as bad as I made him out to be. I promise. Just let me go." "Chloe...It's in your head. He hurt you." "He loves me. He does he really does. He just forgets sometimes and needs a reminder. Now let me go!" "Chloe...I" "Please Beca. I really need to go. Thank you for the last couple nights, I really appreciate it, but now I need to go." "No Chloe!" "Beca." Chloe says now extending her hand as if to shush me. "I'll call you if anything goes wrong. I promise." She leaves my room and heads down the hall to the entrance. "I really think you're making a mistake..." I say following her as she reaches and pulls the door open. "I'm okay Beca, really." Our eyes meet and she senses my worry. She stares at me for a few brief seconds. "See you in class." And with that she is gone. I stand in the silence of my home and stare at the closed door. "She really just did that." I say with disbelief. I peek out the window and watch as she reaches the bottom floor and begins to walk in the direction of her home. My head is throbbing with the type of pain you get after you take an exam. I don't want to see Chloe hurt, I really don't, but I also needed to let her go and remind myself that it's her life not mine. I collapse on the couch. I'm not making a mistake am I? I shouldn't dictate what she can and can't do. She knows Jake better than I do, so maybe he really isn't that bad...but I know he is that bad. And I just let her walk through that door back to him and...
Just then my thoughts are interrupted by my phone ringing in the other room and I get up to retrieve it. I pick it up, seeing it's Jason and answer it. "Hey Jace what's up?" "Hey, are you coming? I'm here." I exhale into the phone. "You didn't forget again did you Bec?" "No! Grandma! Of course not. I'm just running late, I was dealing with something, um go ahead and go in, I'll be there soon." "Okay fine, but hurry." He says and hangs up. With all the commotion going on with Chloe, I completely forgot that Sunday's are the days Jason and I visit our grandma in her nursing home. I quickly change into jeans, a flannel and some sneakers, grab an apple and head out the door. After signing in at the front desk, I walk down the long hall to my grandma's room. "Hey Grams..." I say stepping in. Jason was sitting next to her bed with his arms folded. "Hello Charlotte, how are you dear?" "Oh, it's actually Beca... Charlotte's daughter. Your granddaughter. Jason's sister." I say gesturing towards my brother. "Oh! Of course. Rebeca. Come sit sweetheart." "It's actually just Bec- okay." I say coming in and sitting down. "How are you feeling?" "Oh, well I was just telling Jason, I got put on new meds to help my Arthritis, and the doctor says I'm looking better and better each day. I even got to attend bingo last night and I won!" I nod and crack a slight smile. "Wow thats awesome Grams!" "Yes, it was lovely." She smiles. "Why Jason, that shirt looks so handsome on you." She says turning her head towards him. He looks up from his daze and smirks. "Thanks." He replies quietly. "You okay?" I say looking across the room at him. "Yeah," He says standing up. "Actually could I talk to a sec, Bec?" "Sure." I stand up wiping my hands along my pants. I smile a genuine smile at my grandma as we exit the room. "What's up?" I say as Jason closes the door behind him. "Grams called you Charlotte. Thats what's up. She's losing it." I sigh as he paces back and forth in front of me. "Okay so she's having a little trouble with her memory... it's okay." "Mom's been gone for 8 years Beca. 8 years." "Okay but..." "She complimented me on this shirt 3 times." "Okay Jason but..." "Bec she's all we have left... We can't lose her. I can't lose her." Jason's eyes well up with tears. He takes a seat in the chair on the opposite side of the hallway and put his head in his hands. "Jace..." I say sitting next to him and placing a hand on his back. "It's gonna be okay. I promise." Jason was usually strong. He was 13 years old, when I first watched him shed a tear.
***It's balled droplet ran down his face and his lip quivered. "How could you?" He shouted. I stood behind him in fear and in shock. I'm sure I was crying, but that was the least of my emotions at the time. "How could you dad!" He shouts again. "Jason... please." My mother says getting up from the couch with her crinkled tissue and tears streaming out of her own eyes. "She loves you!" His voice erupts, gesturing towards mom. "You have a family!" My mother places a soft hand on his shoulder as I grip tightly to his hand. "Jason, calm down honey, it's okay." She says wiping her face. "No mom, it's not okay. It would be okay if dad wasn't a fucking psycho!" That set him off. "What did you just say to me?" Dads head cocks from across the room. "Mom take Beca." Jason says. "No!" I shriek. "Beca go with mom." He says again trying to shake my hand out of his. "No!" I say again. Mom rests a hand on Jason's chest, pushing him back. "You wanna repeat that?" My dad says angrier. "I said you're fucking psycho." Another tear escapes his eye as my dad raises the wooden dining room chair above his head and smashes in onto the ground. I remember the sound of the chair crashing vividly. It smashed clean and hard on the floor, sending splintering pieces of wood everywhere. The rest of the memory happened fast. Jason yanked my hand and we ran down the hall to the bathroom. My mom pushed us in and locked the door behind us. We sat on the floor all night long and waited until we heard him leave for the gym the next morning.***
As a 10 year old, I understood that if Jason was crying, he was seriously scared and worried. This frightened me now as well, but I now realize I need to be strong when he can't be. "We'll get through this." I tell him.
After visiting with Gram for a couple hours, the rest of the afternoon was quiet and lonely. I had to work later today, but with all that had been going on between my grandma and Chloe, I wasn't sure if I ever wanted to work again. Chloe had been fired the week before for poor attendance and ever since, work took effort to go to. I decided to make the call and let them know I wouldn't be working anymore. Stephanie sounded rather angry on the other line, but it wouldn't have been the first time that tone had been used with me.
I took a long nap after that and woke up around dinner time. The apartment was again, quiet and I couldn't help but feel a little lonely without Chloe, even though I had been living here alone for a solid month before I met her. I sit waiting for the phone to ring. Waiting to hear her call me for help. But she didn't. I came close to calling her a couple times, but she told me that she would call if she needed me, so I guess this means she doesn't. My head again pounds as I lay face up on the couch, letting innocent tears of worry stream down my face. She doesn't need me. I keep telling myself. She would call if she did.A/N Don't hate me please I know it's been a while. This chapter is a little iffy but I know where I'm going with this! Hang in there.
