Note: Sorry, but this is kind of a filler. Let me know what I need to work on. Also, I thought it would be important to let you know that this is NOT  a final draft of this piece. I just thought it'd be nice to have a sample of my work on here. If it gets enough good attention, then I'll edit, do a little rewording/rewriting and bam. My first book. Let's hope it happens.

In the mean time though, happy wattpadding. xxx

“Did you know that person?”  I ask Mitch as we make our way through the thick, uncut grass outside the shack.

Mitch shakes his head. “No, I didn’t, haven’t seen him in my life, which is weird, because I know just about everyone here. It’s a small town.”

“Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Where do you think he came from?” I ask, trying to keep a conversation going, because at this point, quiet will make me go insane. I have no clue where that kid came from, why he was there, and how I had the nerve to try to kill him so easily. I’ve never killed anything before. Well, besides that squirrel, but that was different.  This is a human being. But, after seeing him coming towards me, it was like an instinct. In that second, I didn't think of him as a human being, but just a general enemy. Once that arrow shot through his head, I felt nothing, no remorse, no heart ache, not a tear fell at all, and it’s scaring me. I don’t want this whole thing to change me.

I look up at the sky, making note that the moon is starting to go down, symbolizing the sun’s rise.

Mitch runs a hand through his copper hair, and ruffles it a little. “I don’t know. I know just as much as you do.”

For some reason, I doubt that.

We cross the old street, and still, the night is quiet out in the open. Where the hell did the CDC go?

“Do you know anything about what happened to the CDC?” I ask him.

His eyes eye the ground, and he kicks a small piece of rock across the black gravel.

“I wish I did.” His eyes dart up, lock straight with mine for just a moment, and flicker back to the ground as a small grin spreads across his face.

I notice this, and I smile too. It’s at this moment I realize that there’s actually someone else out here, other than my sister and I, that is still living, still trying to survive, just like us, and he chose to stick with me.

We get up to the lake, and I internally curse. I forgot all about the lake. I doubt we’ll have time to get across before sunrise.

“We have to cross this don’t we?” Mitch asks suddenly.

I let out a heavy sigh. “Yeah, unfortunately, we do. Or, we could just walk around and save ourselves from having to carry the load on our heads.”

Mitch nods his head, and starts walking in front of me.

“Walking around it is.” I say under my breath.

We walk in silence the whole time. The only noise that’s heard is my occasional impatient sigh as I look at the sky, watching as the moon slowly fades.

“Ya know we’re gonna make it,” Mitch suddenly says, as we start walking up the hill, the view of the lake is slowly drifting off. “to see your sister I mean.”

I look at him and force a doubtful smile, “I sure hope so.”

            * * *

We make it back to camp just as the sun is rising.

I wave my hands around, “Home sweet home.” I say, smiling.

I watch as Mitch tosses his backpack on the ground next to the bare berry bush, and looks over the small space.

“Not bad little lady.” He laughs. “I’m actually surprised.”

“Little lady?” I grin. “You’re an idiot.”

I throw the bag full of supplies and my bag of arrows down next to Mitch’s backpack and notice Grace isn’t out here.

Knowing Grace, she’s probably in the tent sleeping.

I walk over to the tent with a huge smile on my face, so happy to be back, not being able to wait until I see her face when I tell her everything that happened. I unzip the see-through green doors and fling them out of the way. “Hey Grace! You won’t believe-!”

My face falls and my heart skips a beat.

            She’s gone again.
