When they opened their eyes they couldn't believed what they saw. First they were horrified, but then they cleaned all the sailing boat. Jane cried a little over Samuel shoulder and then they threw the white large pillow shaped things they had prepared into the open sea. They didn't talked much after what had happened, but they slept together because Jane had nightmares and she woke up screaming in the middle of the night needing to be calmed down and to be petted to find her sleep again. Every time, Samuel hugged her thigh and whispered in her ear that everything was ok, that he was with her to protect her.
In the morning they were two completely strangers, minding their own business, barely talking and never looking into each other eyes. They spent their time staring at the horizon looking for a land in sight. The waves carried the sailing boat aimlessly they into the open ocean. All the communication were dead and they lost track of their movement so they couldn't retrace their position. Jane enjoyed the day time, cooking the food left they had and staring at the Pacific waters. Samuel was scared when the sun was up, the food was finishing and the sight of the ocean became a nightmare. It would have become their grave if they couldn't find land. At night time he was relaxed because they closed the roof of the sailing boat leaving all that water outside and he could sleep close to that beautiful woman. She was very thin, blonde with curly hair and she had freckles close to the nose. In the dark of the boat, her scent was sweet and bitter because of the salty skin. She invited him to come closer like the lamp of the fisherman attracts the fish. Then she lifted her head and let him put his arms around her neck and chest holding her. The windows let some moon light get through the room letting the golden rings on their fingers shine a different colour.
The days passed slowly, the same routine over and over. They woke up and since they moved out of the bed all the affection they had disappeared into fast movement and embarrassing stares. They both became red like children caught kissing. They lifted the roof and then stared at the horizon until their eyes burned. Then they moved downstairs where Jane boiled some coffee while Samuel made the bed and prepared everything for the day. After an easy breakfast they sat outside fishing and collecting some water to filter. When the sun became too strong to stay outside they boiled the water and took the vapour into a plastic bottles without etiquette. Later on they went out when the sun was going down and put their fishing lines in the water again. Sometimes a fish was caught and they shared a smile, and Samuel would have sung while cooking that night.
Two weeks were gone and there was no sign of land in sight. The moon was rising and although their hope was fading, the relationship between the two strangers became more intense. One month before the best sailors in the States had been chosen to compete in a race in the Pacific Ocean. Eight people had moved on the west side to start a very long journey. The wind was very favorable in the beginning so all the sailing boats moved very fast not knowing what was waiting for them. Even though it was no monsoon season a giant storm was agitating the salty waters in front of them. They found it out too late and all the sailing ships had been scattered around losing almost all the crew. The mast got broken into two and it was impossible to repair.
The moon was almost full and the water became unsteady. The waves began to rise higher and higher. Samuel and Jane closed the roof and hoped to survive the wrath of the ocean. They ate in silence listening to outside, the sounds of the tides. That night was really scary and the boat was moving up and down risking to turn around.
"Are we gonna make it?" Asked the woman.
Samuel scratched his beard and noticed her eyes were wet, almost crying.
"Of course we will make it." He said faking a smile.
She looked around like the water was getting in the boat in that moment.
