Yan-Mei lied in the cab of the truck, her hands keeping pressure on the wound. Blood seeped through the hard, red line, but it was a lot less blood than before. She looked at Michael and Skall, who had both begun gathering medical supplies.
"Okay, if he's not gonna tell it, I will," she said, looking at Michael. "We met up at the edge of the city, we were running from those things, and one of them caught up and tackled me. I pulled a knife, but I think it somehow recognized what I was doing. It grabbed the knife and threw it, cut me in the process. It would've had me, but Thomas put a bullet in its head before it could do anything else."
Michael looked over at Thomas but received only a dark look in return. Savior or no, he was back to his usual gloomy, mysterious self.
Yan-Mei shivered. "Before he shot it, I saw its eyes. It was like looking at another person. There was no anger, no desire, no glee. I've never seen anything like it."
Sitting up, she looked around at the other members.
"These aren't just people or creatures. They're doing a duty of some sort, that's the only way I can think of to say it.
They're soldiers."
As if in response, a flurry of screams sounded nearby, echoing across the walls of the alleyway.
