Dawson stepped out of the truck he had commandeered from the excavation site. He stood in the alley between a pair of stores in the center of the city of Şanlıurfa, the closest city to Göbekli Tepe. This was the rendezvous point for the squad in case of an emergency. Leaning against the truck, he waited for the others to show up. He had been waiting for six hours before Ling Yan-Mei came, accompanied by Thomas Skall.
Skall was trying to hide a limp, and Yan-Mei's shirt had been ripped across the stomach, revealing a similar hard cut across her abdomen. Dawson rushed to the back of the truck to grab the first aid kit he'd found when he searched the truck. Skall opened the driver door of the truck and sat on the seat, while Yan-Mei lied down in the back seat. Dawson grabbed hydrogen peroxide and bandages and rushed back to them.
"This is going to hurt," he said to Yan-Mei before pouring the hydrogen peroxide on the wound. She hissed in pain but she stayed still while he cleaned the wound and wrapped a bandage around her stomach. When he'd finished, he helped her sit up.
"What happened to you two?"
Skall turned from the front. "It's a long story. I'll tell it when the others are here so I don't have to tell it twice." Without another word, he turned forward again and sat quietly.
As they sat, Dawson looked at Yan-Mei's bandages, and he couldn't help but look at his arm. It looked fine, but he could've sworn he saw one of the creatures bite him.
