Kairos |ˈkīräs|

noun [ in sing. ]

A time when conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action; the opportune and decisive moment

[Editor's note]: Officially, Dean and Elena found each other on October 12th, 2013. It was of course a Saturday, the initial holy day. It is curious, for as I was pouring over other cases of soulmates, I found that they almost always meet on a Saturday. Perhaps that was the initial purpose of the day. I digress. This was the day that began the intricate relationship between the young humans, and the significance of this day affected the both of them in a way only true love can.

October 12th, 2013

"I've never even heard of this play," Caroline groans, flopping down on one of the stone steps. Her and Elena were in their second month of college now, and they'd already had their fair share of drama. They wanted a fresh start, especially after all the dealings in Mystic Falls, but they were struggling to stick to a sense of normalcy.

[Editor's note]: And they would keep trying, but it was a pointless venture.

"And what kind of name is Joe Turner's Come and Gone? They should've picked something more popular," Caroline continues as she sips on her morning coffee. Today was supposed to be a study day outdoors—it was, after all, most likely the last sunny, warm day before fall truly set in—but Elena had a feeling it would be filled with more over-priced coffee and Caroline's babbling.

"What, like Pride and Prejudice?" Caroline makes a face at Elena's teasing before opening up the play to the first page.

"Pride and Prejudice would have been better," she grumbles before settling into reading. Smirking, Elena does the same.

Although normally she is quickly absorbed into the book, Elena finds it hard to concentrate on the fine print. Instead she finds herself glancing around, taking in her surroundings. The park isn't any different than normal. It's overrun by college students looking for a breath of fresh air, the music of pencil on paper joining that of chirping birds. There is nothing out of the ordinary, nothing different to drag Elena's attention away from the book in her hand.

Except for a feeling. A feeling so deep inside her she couldn't quite pinpoint its meaning. But it was most certainly there, fluttering beneath her ribcage and dancing in her stomach. The feeling is strikingly close to anticipation, but there is an underlying tone to it that Elena had never experienced before. Besides, what was there to anticipate other than her biology test next week?

[Editor's Note]: For those naïve to the inner workings of soulmates, different "feelings" mark significant occasions. This particular feeling will be further explained later in this section, for Dean was in fact the one seeking answers from this sensation.

"Hey! Earth to Elena?" Caroline snaps her fingers in front of Elena's face, pulling her from her thoughts. "You're supposed to be reading."

"I know, sorry," Elena says, pointedly turning the page.

"Have you gotten to the binding part yet?" Caroline leans over, inspecting Elena's book. "Oh, you're way ahead of me."

"I read some last night," Elena admits, grinning sheepishly. Caroline rolls her eyes. "What?! Unlike you, I like reading."

"Oh that's right, I forgot. Human Elena wants to be a writer," Caroline muses, licking her finger and turning a page even though she hadn't finished yet. "Who knows? Maybe now you could give it a shot."
