Chapter 2

Lance woke up to an empty house.

He sat up, hearing the creaks of his old, uncomfortable bed as he did. He walked to the window, no car in the driveway.

He slowly went down stairs, making sure not to make a single sound.

His dad was laying on the couch, completely knocked out. His breathing was slow, and he still had cocaine lines left all over the coffee table.

Lance quickly cleaned it up so Pidge wouldn't see the mess  their Dad said he would never become again. He brought his dad upstairs to an empty bed. Lance knew very well where his Mom was, it was no surprise she was gone.

Lance looked at the clock.

5:26 AM

He had school in two hours and he only fell asleep at 3. Lack of sleep was Lances best friend, but he usually got more than two hours. He was disappointed with himself.

He watched out the window for a while.

He watched the sun rise over the empty horizon.

He watched his Mom come home in her Blue SUV.

He watched her make breakfast. She was smiling. Not because of her son, or daughter, because she got what she wanted last night from someone other than her husband that is passed out upstairs.

When Lance left for school no one gave him a smile, so instead of not giving one back, he gave them a pretend one as he walked out the door.

Even though he is in grade 11, he still hasn't gotten his license so he can't drive his Moms car to school.

He walks.

Its about a 10 minute walk so he puts in his earbuds and sings loudly to himself on the abandoned road.

He must've been walking fast as it only took five minutes and he was already at the doors of the school. The bricks that created its outer appearance were faded and dirty. The front doors had cracks in the windows and things like "Fuck School" written all over them in sharpie.

He didn't want to be there that day.

He knew Hunk would probably talk to him more now, but Keith's comment from yesterday got the best of him.

Lance kept thinking and thinking to a point where he started writing his thoughts on his paper in front of him. He quickly realised and tucked it in his coat pocket not bothering to read it.

The rest of the day went by slower than usual. Lance kept looking at the clock, which made time decide to be a dick and not let him out of school quicker.

Keith and Hunk  bot weren't at school so Lance was alone.

He knew they probably didn't want to be friends with him, it was all friendly banter, but he couldn't help the feeling he had. The feeling that they all were meant to be best friends. Maybe Lance thought this way because he wasn't used to people talking to him nicely or helping him with his homework. Maybe he was just blinded by the fact that they might want to be his friend. Maybe no one wanted to talk to him. Maybe he would be alone forever, always walk the halls of the school alone. Maybe Keith and Hunk aren't here because of him. Maybe he scared them away like he scared his sisters and mothers love away. Maybe all the things Courtney used to say to him all hours of the night were true, and that's all Keith and Hunk thought about him.

Lance rushed to the bathroom.

He saw his complexion in the mirror that looked like no one bothered to clean.

His face was painted with tears, the light reflecting off of every drop that covered his face.

His head was pounding louder than the toilets flushing behind him.

His heart was racing for a finish line that seemed to be outside Lances chest as he fell to the ground, trying to hold onto his breath that seemed to be escaping his body.

He cursed his mother for not guarding him from the anxiety that wrecked her life too, cursed her for teaching him it should be something that's always there.

It was only his second day and he was already having a panic attack.

Is this what Keith meant? This school is so bad that if you have a weak mindset it will drive you to a horrible state, on your second day?

Lance can't blame it on the school, he was the one that was overthinking. No one had said anything to him to bring this on, he came up with all these stories on his own.

All these ideas of people hating him and not thinking he was worth anything weren't all made up.

His mom, his sister, his dad, Courtney. They all made him feel useless. They all made him feel unworthy, unloved.

Lance didn't realise he wasn't breathing.

Suddenly his world went black and quiet, like he was sleeping.

He wished he could stay there forever but he knew he would wake up in the Nurses office, the last place he wanted to be.
