I didn’t want to go home just yet, and I didn’t want to go back to school either. I knew I would have to deal with it eventually, but I just wasn’t ready. I had really loved Seth, and he had broken my heart to pieces. I decided to go to the only place I knew I could be alone, the park. When I got there, the smell of freshly cut grass hit me, and I felt a connection to the earth. I finally summoned up to courage to check my phone, and I had 10 missed calls, 3 from Seth and 7 from Anna.
After a few hours, it was getting pretty hot, so I decided to go back home. I went straight to my room, closed my door, and cried my eyes out. Then I heard something hit my window, I knew it was Seth, it was the way he called me in the middle of the night so we can sneak out. He kept throwing little pebbles at the window, and no matter how much I tried to block out the noise, it started irritating me in the end. So I went to the window, opened it, and asked him what he wanted.
"I'm so sorry Stacy, I swear to you I don’t know how that happened, it was a mistake, I love you, please, please don’t do this," he said.
I looked at him for some time, he seemed pretty sincere, but I couldn’t forgive him, so I said, "Seth, leave me alone, you’ve done too much already. We're over."
All he did was look at me for about 5 minutes straight, then he started talking again; I got so mad, that I didn’t even know how it happened, one second I was thinking about him leaving, and the next second, he was flying into the bushes. Something was wrong, I was sure of that, something I could feel deep inside, so I decided to talk to my mom, since we were very close. I walked towards my mother's room, slightly shaken up by what happened, and knocked. She opened the door and smiled at me her beautiful smile.
I decided to tell her the whole story, and after I was done, she had a look of pain on her face, like she was contemplating whether she should tell me something or not, and I guess she decided not to, because the next thing she did was slowly hug me and tell me to go talk to my grandmother about it. I was surprised at this sudden liking for my grandmother, my mom and grandma didn’t get along very well, and I never knew the reason for their conflict; that was why I barely got to see my grandma even though she lived pretty close.
As I started walking up the driveway, I smell lavenders, my grandmother loves lavenders. I walked up the steps and used the key, which I knew was kept in the flower pot near the door, to get it. When I got in there, I heard my grandmother speaking, it sounded like a melody, but after listening harder, I realized she was chanting something.
I walked through her door as she said, "Hello Stacy darling, how are you doing today? Have you come to tell me anything important?"
I felt as though she had read my mind; my dad used to joke around about how my grandmother had magical abilities and things like that, but we all thought they were just jokes.
She finally turned around and I realized how much I looked like her, the similarities were so noticeable that it wasn’t even normal. We both had auburn hair and green eyes, we were almost the same height, and we both smiled the exact same way. My mother looked nothing like us though; she had jet black hair and brown eyes.
Anyway, my grandma finally spoke and said, "I've been expecting you." I smiled at her and told her that I had some questions, she ushered me to a nice red couch and we sat down. I looked at her and told her the whole story, how Seth and I broke up, how the lights switched on and off during our first encounter that day, and how I was thinking about him flying away and he did.
She sighed and said, "I thought it had skipped you too, since it skipped your mother, but I guess it didn’t. You can make good use of it you know, it isn’t all bad, and you can help people with it."
She sounded crazy, I was just sitting there thinking what is this lady talking about, so I voiced out my thoughts and said, "What do you mean? What is this 'it' you're talking about?"
She looked at me and asked, "Have you spoken to your mother about this yet?"
I thought back to my mother's reaction when I told her, and realized that it must have been something very serious for her to freak out so much. I told my grandma about my mother's reaction
She nodded understandingly and said, "As expected. Listen Stacy, this might sound a bit crazy, and trust me, I thought so myself when I was first told, but it isn’t that big of a deal."
I nodded, she was starting to really scare me, but I let her continue, "Okay, so we come from a long line of supernatural beings – witches – but we're not like those witches that you hear about on TV or in books, we're the kind that was kept secret for so long, because during the Salem Trials, we had hidden until it was all over."
I looked at her like she was crazy, then burst out laughing and said, "You're kidding right? This has got to be a joke; why would you say something like this to me? If this were true, then why wouldn’t my mother have talked to me about it? Why wait till now?"
My grandma sighed again, and started speaking, "Stacy, your mother didn’t talk to you about it earlier because she never had powers, I guess the powers skipped her generation, I guess something went wrong, and because she never had powers, she hated anything that had to do with witchcraft. We're not the bad guys here, we actually help a lot. Some witches have affinities for elements, for example, I have an affinity for Earth, which isn’t very rare since witches are usually really good at growing herbs and making medicine."
She then looked at me again and said, "This sounds like it's too much for you, I think I've told you enough for today, here take these books home and read them, they might explain about our kind that you wouldn't want to hear from me, but listen, I need you to remember one thing, our powers are greatly connected to our emotions, and you haven’t learned to control your power just yet, so I think it would be best if you tried not to get into any emotional situations."
And with that, she got up, and went back to her chanting. I slowly retreated from the house, and walked out; I had just heard the most shocking news of my life.
