The rest of the day passed slowly, nothing really important happened, Jayden was in my last period too – Chemistry – and Mr. Smith assigned him to be my lab partner. We talked all day, and had a really good time, he was so nice, and so not what I expected him to be. It turned out that he lived in the same block as me, which was good since I really did need a friend.
I got home and decided to finally start reading the book my grandma gave me; I knew I was going to have to talk to her again, so I wanted to learn some more about where I came from. Our tribe was called The Llanddona Witches, and we had originated in 1461, there were random pictures that I didn’t quite understand so I flipped the page. The next page stated some "gifts" that the witches got from their goddess; some could be the ability to read minds, the ability to move things with the mind, the ability to see the future, and many other things.
It was also said that every 200 years, one witch possessed all these gifts and was the most powerful witch of all. This witch though, had the choice of either being good or evil; the last witch, Hecate, decided to use her power into getting herself more power, which ended up destroying her. I already knew that, the whole Hecate thing, but I didn’t know that it was actually true, I always thought that it was just a myth, just like the Greek myths that people talk about.
The book said that The Salem Trials didn't destroy us because the powerful witch of that time, Heras, protected our tribe by shielding us from human eyes by using her powers; she was known to be the good witch, the one that never betrayed a soul, and used her power for healing and helping all sorts of people, even the humans that had killed her family.
I was so captivated by what I was reading that I almost didn't hear my phone ring, I quickly got up and answered the phone, it was my grandmother.
"Stacy darling, can you come over? We need to talk."
It sounded serious, so I said, "Yes sure, I'll be right over."
When I got there, she looked like a mess, she told me she had been thinking about everything that had happened and wanted me to learn everything there is to know before I was in danger.
"In danger?" I asked, confused, "from what?"
She looked distressed, she said, "I can't explain everything right now, but what I can do is teach you how to use your powers for the good. There is a school you know, where different types of witches learn everything about their abilities."
I just looked at her like she was out of her mind, "I'm not going to some stupid witch school, I'm fine right where I am, I didn’t ask for this, it was given to me, so you can't take my life away from me!" I yelled.
"I never said you had to, I was just telling you that there are a lot more like you, some good, and some horribly evil." She smiled at me and said, "Now, I need to teach you how to use your powers correctly, we don’t want you to blow up your house or something."
I gasped, "Is that even possible? Can we really do all those things in the books?"
She nodded.
She took me into a room filled with beakers and ingredients, it looked a lot like a labatory, but I already knew what it was, it was where she made her potions. It was actually really weird thinking that I could do things like this, I was always plain old Stacy Miller until I started dating Seth and became more popular, after all, I was a football player's girlfriend; emphasize on the was.
There were hundreds and hundreds of books on the shelves at the corner of the room, she went over there, and picked a book that had a sign on it, the sign was basically 3 ovals that intersected each other. She put it on a table and turned to me.
"Have you used your powers since we last spoke? As in, has anything weird happened since?"
I knew I had to tell her to understand what was happening so I said, "Uhm, actually, I have."
"How?" she asked.
"Mom was knocking on the door, and I decided to open it with my power; so I concentrated really hard on opening the door and even imagined a hang open it, and when I opened my eyes, the door was opened." I smiled as I remembered the rush of energy I had felt.
My grandma stared at me, wide-eyed, like I was some sort of ghost. She then sighed and said, "Stacy, you know that it isn’t normal for a witch to get her powers so early, but in some cases, it happens. But, what I really don’t understand is how you opened that door, you usually have to be able to absorb the energy around you so you can use it. Witches can't learn to use their powers by themselves the day they get those powers. You need to play it safe, only use your powers when asked."
I nodded.
"Bad people, well, bad witches, are always on the hunt for a young powerful witch to join them, and they can sense energy, so don’t use too much of it."
I nodded again, this was starting to sound scary and I didn’t understand why her voice sounded so urgent.
My grandma then took me to her basement, it was a really big room. She smiled and said, "I want you to try and pick up that book," Was she serious? She took me to a room to pick up a book? I started walking over there when she put her hand on my shoulder. "With you mind." She said.
"Oh, okay, I'll try."
I closed my eyes and concentrated really hard on the book, I wanted this to work, I knew I needed to learn how to do this. I tried doing as she told me and absorbing the energy that I felt around me. I outstretched my arm towards the book, my fingers started to slightly tingle, and I knew something was going to happen; I could feel the air swirl around me, it felt kind of nice. That was when I heard my grandmother gasp; I opened my eyes and was surprised to see the book on fire.
I turned to grandma, needing an explanation, but her eyes showed that she didn’t have one. I had never seen my grandma with fear in her eyes, but today, she looked at me like I was some sort of unknown species.
"Extraordinary." I heard her say after a while. "You aren’t like us, Stacy, I believe that you have more power than a normal witch can handle.
I couldn’t believe I had just done that, that was crazy. I felt like a freak, I didn’t feel normal, but my grandmother's reassuring smile made me feel much better. I felt light-headed though, energy was still passing through my body, I could feel it, and I enjoyed that feeling.
"Grandma, I think that's enough practice for today. I don’t feel very well." I said.
I think she could feel what I was feeling, after all, she did have insight, she could be reading my mind right now.
"Okay sweetie, just go home, and rest."
