This girl never ceases to surprise me really. She is a breath of fresh air! I've seen her funny side with her book "When Lennon met Harry" (I'm talking laughing-out-loud funny not just smiling or chuckling) but with this book, I've seen another standpoint, another layer that has completely captivated me.
The story goes back and forth from the U.K to France during World War I and it narrates the tale of a young couple divided by status and circumstance. I don't want to give away too much but I can only say that although I am not a huge fan of war novels I found this one unbelievably enthralling. It depicts the menace of war, how it destroys people's lives and morale in such a way that your heart aches for anyone who's had to suffer such a plague.
The writing is simply amazing, the emotions this story evoques are indescribable, the setting convincing and engaging. It feels like you are there, like you are a mouse in the pocket of a soldier, like a daisy on the muddy soil moistened by soldiers' blood. It's a jewel and so is the author.
Give her a chance. All her works are brilliant!
