It seems liked I had just gotten into bed when the alarm went off. I looked over at the clock. I was sure it was wrong. It was very clear, however, that the time was 5:00am. I was not moving too quickly. Maybe it was the jet lag. I did get dressed, and went down to the lobby where I met the others. We were all present and accounted for. Now it was off to our first stop and our headquarters- Frankfurt on der Oder.
Frankfort is about 80km from Berlin. We actually left about 6:30am and got into the city about 8:30am. We checked into our hotel, and found a place to eat breakfast and to get to know each other better.
I wanted to know how far we were from the battle site. I was told about 38km. It would take less than an hour to get there. We would not be heading out right a way. We had to make sure that the equipment was in place for the area we were assigned to. I listened carefully, because I wanted to make sure that the area I would be working in; was where Curt died, so that I could put the ring with the remains, and than "discover" them. I felt in my shirt pocket and the ring was securely in place.
The weather turned rainy, so it was decided to stay put for a day, and head out about 9:00am the following day for our first dig. Leo and Mose showed me around the city. Since I could speak German, I found a lot very interesting.
Later in the day, Karp and Klavaya wanted to cross the border into Poland. I thought it would be interesting to see what it looked like from the other side of the river. When I was with Curt I saw "our" side that was getting hammered from the artillery on the opposite shore. Now I could see their vantage points.
After dinner on the Polish side we returned to our hotel. We met again and we were broken up into smaller groups. Since I was a newbe, I would be in the group with Leo and Mose. Hilde, from Holland who were experienced at all this. Leo and Mose kidded me that I had romantic designs on Hilde. She was a really attractive girl, a university graduate. I didn't think she would be interested, but the thoughts that she would were an ego booster.
