Chapter Four

Everything was set, they were just in need of a car and after spending half of the day before on the metro, Thomas was not looking forward to it again, but here he was. The coolness of the cooler full of beers and bottled lemonade chilled his thighs, and gave him strange looks from the people around them. Despite the fact that he had two boys hanging off of him instead of one. God, what would his father think?

"How come that girl can stab her eyes, but not me?" Thomas diverted his attention to a short Asian girl that Alexander was pointing towards. She was delicately putting on eyeliner as best she can on the metro while staring at a pocket mirror in her hands. She noticed the three men staring and awkwardly waved to the best of her ability, one eye finished. Going back to what they were doing before, Thomas scolded Alexander for pointing as it was rude before explaining she was simply putting on makeup. "And only girls do this?"

"Well, not necessarily." John answered for him, much to Thomas' gratitude. "Boys can do it too, but America hasn't quite accepted that yet. I used to do it when I was in high school."

"Yeah, John was the prettiest boy in school." Thomas mocked, nudging John with his shoulder. The shorter rolled his eyes before going quiet. Narrowing his eyes at an elderly man across the train. "John?"

"We're being followed." Alexander answered for him, slowly standing up and reaching towards the cubbies above them, seeming to get ready for the stop. John did the same, stretching before grabbing the pole in the centre of the train. Thomas stayed as he was, thinking the two were being paranoid, but that was before the man's eyes flashed dark red for a moment, almost as if Thomas was imagined it as well, but he wasn't that idiotic. Alexander leaned closer to whisper to Thomas, "If he starts to attack, take John and run. I'll handle it."

"What- no." Thomas argued, but Alex looked like he had just won. They waited for a moment before the train skidded to a stop and red lights started flashing, the emergency alarm.

"Do not be alarmed. We have just reached some slight technical difficulties. Thank you for being patient with the New York Sub. Station." The captain's voice rang through static. The elderly man from before was gone. Alex grabbed Thomas' wrist and started running, shoving him into the next car with John, locking it behind him. Luckily, there was only one other person.

"Have you seen a- Holy shit why do you have a gun?!" Thomas shouted, stepping farther away from Alexander as he pointed the weapon at the man. John's eyes widened at the man.

"Geez, didn't think we'd see him again huh?" Alexander smirked, not moving from where he was, in front of Thomas and John protectively. "Laf, drop the act. I know it's you."

"You're no fun anymore." The man pouted, removing the paper away from his face. Thomas froze. They had identical features, apart from the fangs and red eyes. Alex seemed disturbed by this fact as well. "What? Are you surprised I chose to become your favourite.... Pest."

"Yes, because from what I remember, you were fond of a certain Mulligan." Alex challenged. 'Laf' looked uncomfortable with the mention of Mulligan. He rose, his height about a centimetre taller than Thomas. That centimetre was the most terrifying centimetre ever. "I'd hate to have to drag him back up, but you might force my hand. If I remember correctly, he thought of you as a pest."

"You little-"

"H-Hey, let's calm down." John interjected, going between the two, spreading his arms out to further their distance. Laf looked surprised to see John, a look if familiarity flashed across his face.

"John, didn't expect you here...." Laf trailed off. "Everyone said you gave up-"

"Shut up!" John shouted, putting his back to Alexander, putting all of his energy into Laf. Thomas was thoroughly confused.

"What's going on?" He asked, Alex tossing a smile that promised answers before grabbing John, pulling him into Thomas before firing. Laf screamed in pain, clutching his shoulder. Black and red smoke flew out of the wound.

"You...."

"Leave." Alexander ordered, a cold look on his face. "You know I can hit every soft spot on your body, giving you a slow, agonising, torture. You'll simply wish for such a sweet relief as death."

"To think... an angel with a traitor." Laf snickered before disappearing in a cloud of smoke. Alex sighed, dropping to his knees letting the tears fall down his face. His sobs brought an aching to Thomas' chest. As if seeing him hurt brought pain to Thomas. Dropping to his side, pulling Alexander close and comforted him.

John couldn't help but think about himself.

"Now, everyone knows I'm still alive." John shuddered, the train lurching forward with motion. Thomas looked towards his friend.

"What do you mean?"

"I-I was friends with him- Lafayette- when I was... I was a-"

"Demon." Thomas finished for him, his eyes dark. "Why wouldn't you tell me?"

"Because I was assigned to you, same as Alexander." John explained, trying not to actually answer the question. "I was supposed to make you go down a path of evil, cruelty, but I couldn't. You were too important. I gave up my immortality for you!"

"So every shitty thing that I'd done is your fault?" Thomas' voice dropped, gripping Alex tighter. Biting his cheek as to not start crying himself.

"I'm sorry."
