Chapter Six

John was pissed. No, beyond pissed! He was livid. He just wanted to live life like a human, a stupid petty human, like Thomas, but Alexander had to ruin it. The perfect being that always tried to one up the freckled demon. Well, not really a demon anymore. Nonetheless, it made John angry.

"Hey, listen, I'm sorry." Thomas apologised suddenly. The two were currently on the roof of the small motel watching Alexander pick out stray feathers from his back. They were bright red from blood and seemed like it hurt. "I-I'm sorry, John. It was awful of me to try and blame you for every wrong thing I did, and it just wasn't right of me. And I'm apologisin' because I do love you-"

"I get it, Tommy, I do." John stopped his friend before he could continue to hurt him anymore than he already has. "You find yourself in love with something that can't even feel love. I don't get it personally, but hey. I'm not one to talk. But let me tell you this dear friend," John placed a tender hand on Thomas' shoulder. "Alexander will hurt you. Trust me on this, because he's hurt me. He hurts everyone."

"What do you mean?" Thomas asked, tapping his fingers anxiously on his knees.

"He doesn't mean to, mind you, but he just.... Doesn't understand feelings. Even for a guardian angel who spends all of his time around humans." John laid down, crossing his arms under his head. He closed his eyes softly and felt the warmth of the afternoon sun.

"Isn't goin' to make me stop likin' him, my dearest Laurens." Thomas defied him, again. He never fails to surprise him. John has lived for centuries and fought in wars, just because he can, and Thomas is the one thing he'll never understand. He just keeps ringing him in.

"Yeah, I know. He should also be done by now. Alexander was most likely listening in." John smirked, looking towards the angel. He was sitting still and looked almost embarrassed at eavesdropping.

"Alex, babes, were you listenin' in?!" Thomas laughed, standing up and picking up Alexander, twirling him around. The angel was screaming with laughter, face red as Thomas threatened to drop him.

"Drop me and I'm taking you with me!" Thomas stopped. A sly grin on his face before he let go of Alexander, a small scream before he could reach anywhere near the ground, and Thomas caught him. "I am having a heart attack."

"Chill, you're fine." John insisted, pulling his hair out of it's hair band, the curls flowing freely. "But we should get going. Who knows when Lafayette and his henchmen are going to try and ambush us."

"Great, and here I thought we were havin' a normal summer holiday." Thomas rolled his eyes, putting Alexander back to his feet. The three jumped down, Alexander tripping and falling into John's open arms. "Hey, since we're in Indiana, we should go to Pawnee."

"What? Why?" John asked before it dawned on him. "No, no. No we are not."

"City of Pawnee, third in obesity and first in friendship!" The taller bellowed with laughter, tears springing in his eyes. Alexander gave a confused look to the demon, who only replied with an eye roll.

"Alex, it's better to sit in bewilderment than try to understand him." John patted his back, moving towards their small motel room to gather their belongings. Alexander tried to help, but all that resulted in was him shoving everything into one case. Thomas found this amusing. John saw it as an inconvenience.

"Well, that's the last bag, I'll sign out and then we can go." Thomas smiled, ruffling Alexander's hair as he walked away.

"So, did you tell Thomas something to make him forgive me?"

"Of course. In many ways, you are my best friend, John." Alexander smiled, lightly dropping his hand onto John's.

"Please, every day we saw each other it would be filled of arguing." John chuckled, remembering the times fondly. "I remember that I pushed you in the river at Thomas' camping trip. You almost killed me then and there."

"Yeah, I was a bit more hot-headed in my youth." Alexander admitted, looking off into the warm sky. "I've always somewhat admired you."

"Why are you telling me this?" John asked. Alexander shrugged.

"Perhaps because I fear I might not have the pleasure of seeing you again, or maybe I'm just growing soft."

"Well, I appreciate it." John pulled Alexander into a warm hug. If only the demons back home could see him now, holding his enemy in his arms. They would probably turn him into a pile on Washington's tile. It is worth it though, Alexander's warm.

"It's great to see you two cooperatin' for once!"

Goddamn it Thomas.
